Default psycho Sophie

No doubt about it now. I am getting to see the "psycho" aka "hormonal" part of Sophie. Bless her little heart.
Last week about mid day, out of the blue she decides it is not ok for me to put my hand in the cage so she does her puff up, head down, gonna shred your hand routine. I back off no problem. She starts dancin' and posing and doing her she wants me to get her out posturing. I open the cage for her (my other birds are out and playing) and same thing, puff up, head down, gonna shred your hand routine.
Finally she comes out and we play a bit, usual stuff. We do peek a boo with her on the play stand and she gets mad at me!! lol Bells and whistles are going off ok? I'm sitting down letting all the birds do their thing when Sophie drops to the floor. She heads for the door separating the living room from the computer/bird sleep room. She gets herself around the drape we have blocking the door way so she can get to the mirror doors (closet doors are mirrored). She's mad at that bird in the mirror so I go to pick er up. Well I sure am happy the skin on my hands is tough I tell ya!! So I do my sweeping arm thing and she steps up which any other time ends the attitude (attitudes are very rare) not this time, she still wanted a piece of me. So back to the cage she went.
Sophie was fine the next day. A little more vocal then normal but her usual self. Until this afternoon/evening. She seemed ok when she came out of the cage........... a little more intense looking then usual but still ok and nice ya know? Normal play stuff going on then she decides its time. Time to get the bird in the reflection. She is going after any reflection she can see. Of course she remembers EVERY place she can see herself.
She is doing laps up my arm around my head on my shoulder and so on, I'm not letting her stay as I prize my ears. Then in Sophie fashion, she leaps from my shoulder to the top of Benji's (my Lovebird who is playing with my Parotlet there) cage. There is a picture frame thing with knick knacks and photos and GLASS, right to it. Beaks it. Sees little birds in cage, wants them too!! I go to pick her up (only seconds have passed) and she is after my finger big time. I do the arm sweep thing and up she comes and back to normal. Put her on the play stand.
Down she goes. Runs over the the water cooler (shiny black) and attacks the bird in the reflection. Back to the play stand she goes. Not happening she says. This time she heads for the door again the the mirrored doors. Oh she is puffed up and MAD at that bird. She is NOT coming peacefully this time. I had to towel her!! As soon as she was up, nice birdy again. As soon as I set her down on the play station she was off to the races. Back to the mirror. She went after it so hard I was scared she was going to hurt her self smashing into the glass beak first like she was!! She attacked me!! Head down, wings out, jump up try to to nail me attack. Fast and furious she was!! I didn't want to just snatch her up. So I got down and tried to see if she would calm down at all. Not happening. As I reached for the towel........... bless her heart she started running away!! I picked her and she gives me one of her love bites on my finger. You know, just kind of holds it for a second then lets go? I put her in her cage for a few minutes and right away, she was back to normal. 5 minutes latter she was posturing for me to pick her up, so I did nahh............ sweet as can be she was. Let me just say again, I am so glad my hands are tough!!
I also want to thank all of you for sharing your daily events and so on so I was prepared in my head for this. If this is how it is, it isn't so bad, but that is because I am well informed.

OMG when you got to the part about Benji and Cricket my heart was in my throat! OK yeah I want you to keep your ears but ...Cricket and Benji omg....

I'm doing the hand sweep not the arm sweep with the Parrotlets but they have each other. They only attack my feet and wall unit when they're bored. I see the male trying to regurge a bit but I figure by the time he manages, it'll be fall and overwith.

Thank you for being compassionate to her and understanding she can't help it.

Awe Jim, poor Sophie, but I feel for ya though. We've got the grumpies here too. I am going to try a little earlier bed time and see if it helps at all.

Boy, that Sophie is keeping you on your toes, isn't she? A real plus to be prepared and know that something like this was coming, can you imagine a bird owner with no prior knowledge running up against this? OT for the Ekkie forum, but somewhat relevant: Reminds me of the woman I got Chico from. A week or so after I got him, she called me up to see how we were doing, and asked if I'd noticed "that odd smell". She said "You know, the people who had him before me used to spray him with vinegar and water for flea control, that's why he has that smell sometimes". Bless her heart, she'd had him for two years, and never heard of Amazon musk! Imagine thinking that being sprayed with vinegar and water two years prior would still make a bird smell? Of course the prior owners were even more ignorant, not knowing that birds aren't really the ideal hosts for fleas. Then again, they kept Chico in the basement garage with their Rottweillers. I can't imagine having a bird and not trying to find out everything I possibly could about them. She was also clueless as to Zon breeding season and hormones (in spite of being a former Cockatiel breeder).
