Default Boing question

I am going to attempt to make a boing for Baxter (TAG). I was going to use cotton rope. Does anyone know what size diameter the rope should be? Does 3/4" sound about right?

Thanks

I have not made for a TAG but I think it is too thin.

For boing I'd suggest buying one. They have been known to be injured with "bad" rope getting nails stuck.

I have one of suprime or pima cotton that they can "shred" lose from. It's not cheap but I've had it a year and it shows no wear.

I'll try and get the brand name and post it this weekend.

the diameter can be large since they arent spending all their time on it and too small is uncomfortable...

Honestly, I'd suggest buying one as well. You can find some great quality boings for $25-$40, depending on the size you want. I'm not sure of the exact diameters of Ollie's boings, but I'm sure they're around 3/4". They're both definitely smaller than her 1" PVC gyms. The smaller size allows her to hang upside down, flap her wings, and make the boing swing as far as it'll go. She goes crazy on her boings. I would think 3/4" would be okay for a TAG.

Hmmm. I think I'll just go out and buy one instead. Thanks for letting me know.

Have you seen this article? Bird Toys - Make a Boing Doesn't specifically talk about rope size, but I would think that 3/4 to 1" would be about right. All my boings are store-bought, and are untreated sisal. I think using Stainless Steel wire and choosing the safest possible rope are the two most important things. Even then, its always a good idea to periodically inspect the rope for spots where a toe could get caught.

I don't like to use cotton rope for anything. I use Sisal. If I buy a toy with cotton rope, I disassemble it, and restring it with Sisal. I have been told that cotton rope can cause crop impactioin. True or not (and I lean towards it being true based on who told me) I prefer to err on the side of caution. If you do get a cotton rope boing, please be insane about trimming it whenever you see any threads. If you choose Sisal, you don't have to trim it.

One of my cockatoos Gabby has preened his boing out so far it is just a BIG POOF of a thing. He surely loves it.

I'm sure it could be true in many cases if they eat it. Right now I'm fighting my Parrotlets from getting flip flop impaction! Go figure, they dont chew any cotton but rubber? Oh yeah....and lately the hen is determined to chew off all the leather bindings from my entertainment center!

Birds seem to have an appitite for anything and everything, especially if they aren't supposed to have it.
