Default Shocker at Petco

I went to Petco today (something I don't usually do) and, they had doves and pigeons for sale!!! Out of curriosity. I asked how one would care for these birds. The first girl had no idea so she asked another who called the manager over...The manager told me you would treat it just like any other bird you would buy from them. Since when did Petco sell these beautiful birds and, aren't they informed as to how to care for them?

They had water bottles for cryin out loud!
I told the manager that he had better read up on Doves and Pigeons before he puts them up for sale. (and I wasn't very nice about it)

That is terrible Susan....I do not like Petco.
#1 They are the highest priced Pet Store
#2 A couple of Petco's I had been to in Jersey, did not take very good care of their birds that were for sale and had little or no knowledge about them!

I went there when they first opened about a year ago and this is the first I had been back.
Yes, they are bery high on the prices. There was a PB Parrotlet and they wanted $600 for it. It was also very ragged looking as were many of the Tiels.

Here's some PETCO info, please file a complaint and get an incident report number:
*************************
If you have concerns about a PETCO store, please—in addition to letting us know by e-mailing EmilyA@peta.org—call PETCO's customer hotline at 1-888-824-PALS and/or e-mail PETCO at AnimalsFirst@PETCO.com.

For after-hours complaints, please call PETCO at 858-453-7845, extension 5858. When calling PETCO's hotline, please be sure to obtain an incident number and ask for the name of the person you speak with.

An important note for current PETCO employees: An associate hotline number is available to you. The number should be posted in your store's break room and/or easily obtainable from training materials, paycheck stubs, etc.

PETCO's corporate office assures PETA that calls to this hotline are handled by an independent party and that you are not required to provide your name when calling with concerns.

It is vital that you obtain an incident number when you call. Please do not let anyone dissuade you from using this important resource—it is your direct line to PETCO's corporate headquarters.
**************

The PETA agreement reached with PETCO did not include "small parrots" (undefined) or non parrots, unfortunately.

Let me know if these numbers dont work I havent used them in a year or so....Cindy

I am praying you did mention the water depth, those birds will perish in very short notice without proper water....either a trip back there or a phone call is needed right away...
Thank you kindly...

A Pet Supplies Plus near me had Dove pairs in their store recently and one Pigeon - the Doves weren't for sale but for breeder pairs I think, and I can't remember if the Pigeon was for sale, but it looked to me that they might be getting into sales of Doves and Pigeons as well.

I recently replied on another post decrying people buying ANY animal from a pet store. The response to my post was "well, if we don't buy the animals they have, they will die, we are saving them!!!"

Sad as it is, you are not saving animals by buying from pet stores. You are encouraging them to get more animals.

Anyone who has ever raised animals seriously--of any kind--will tell you, do your homework, and find a reputable breeder. Develop a relationship not only with that breeder but with the breeder community of the animal you are interested in.

For the most part, pet stores keep the animals in poor condition, their employees know little about them, and they sell animals that are often of poor genetic quality. That is simply the facts. The reason this is so, is that NO reputable breeder would sell their animals to a pet store.

This is why when new laws are brought up to better the conditions within petshops and breeding facilities "support the laws".....
Way to many times I see folks complain about petco/petsmart and other pet shops, I also have seen horrible conditions at these shops, be responsable and use responsable speach "very hard for me to do", so I turn the wife loose onto the shop manager...LOL.....but write down names of whom you speak to and the times and dates...FOLLOW UP....return the next day to assure the problem is being delt with, and print out the information Cindy has provided.
If you don't...who will???????
As far as I am concerned NO live animals should be sold at Petshops, Only Private Licenced Breeders...Federally regulated.....
Animals lives do mean something...not just the dollar bill....
The little birds lives also, the recent so called victory claimed by PETA concerning these shops no longer sell the big birds is very SHALLOW, its like saying "to hell with the smaller birds"....
& if you want to own a Parakeet...get out $500.00 not $19.99...maybe...just maybe "then" there suffering will end at the hands of mankind....
Right now there are more Bad humans that throw animals lives around as if they have no meaning, then there are GOOD humans that love animals and respect them and there needs....this needs to change.....

Better yet? Adopt an animal from a shelter......some even have birds! That is really saving a life that would otherwise be doomed!
