Default The God Parent Program

When I used to be a Member/Moderator for Aviary.Info I brought up a Idea, now SugarCat has contacted me with a very serious question, a very legit concern....
SugarCat lives in a suburb close to me here in the Twin Cities area, she has asked me to be her birds God Parent if something was to happen to her and her mate.
I was going to buy a Laminant Machine and was thinking of Wallet sized cards stating "I have birds at home", Please contact there God Parent with all the God Parents information.
I have not figured out the cost per card, but I do know this is a concern to just about all bird lovers.
What do you folks think about this God Parent Program?
Hey, If your in a car accident "I pray this never happens", but just how long before someone say's...."Oh dear lord" ...."there birds"......
For a program like this to work means a Commitment...
Feedback needed.

This is something that I had never considered. I have thought about who i will put in my will to get the birds, but never really thought about the "what if" we are both gone scenerio. I think it is a wonderfful idea. At this point in my life I don't have anyonne that would be willing to take by fids. HMM

This is an awesome idea! I think about this every single time I leave the house. I would love to have a card like that. I just need a contact person to put on there and Bee lives too far away!.

This is a great idea, with my health problems (I have cystic fibrosis) I already have a living will. In my will it states that my dad will be given "custody" of all of my birds, horses, etc. Certain birds are going to certain people who have requested them and I know the bird has a great bond with them, and they will be happy with that person when I am gone. Although I stated that if the time comes that my dad can no longer take care of the birds, or afford to do so he may give them away. But I really should have tons of back up plans like yours Arty...this is a great idea !!!

This is where division comes into play, Don't mention this forum and or that forum here on this Forum...DIVISION will be everyones downfall, what a mess...
Here in the USA, we thrive on one word but yet this word eludes us...the first word in USA is what?....UNITED.....but yet we are devided....
Recently many of us reached out to the little ones being cared for by the Gabriel Foundation and commited to a sponsorship, What if all of us stood up for a fellow members birds....Parrot Chatter as a WHOLE, you say you don't know anyone to take your birds in and care for them, you say folks are not close enough....why should these issues stand in the way of having some peace of mind...
Parrot Chatter has the chance here to take this God Parent issue to a higher level, EXCLUSSIVE, but it does require UNITY-COMITMENT....can this work?....You better believe it can and if done correctly, Parrot Chatter will become a very very well know name within the avian world...not that we don't strive for this, not that we are not making progress....but what if we all kicked in and I mean kicked in and put some funds away for such a program, Maybe someone knows how to invest safely and the funds will grow, but oneday something will happen and all of us..."all of us"....will be there to help our fellow bird lovers birds...
Hey....Imagin....Dream...whatever...The Parrot Chatter God Parent Foundation.
I had this dream many years ago....BrokenWings God Parent Program....
I honestly think this will work, for all bird lovers on all forums, but the foundation should be set right here on Parrot Chatter...hey...BirdTalk Magazine started somewhere RIGHT??????
How would you like to see The Parrot Chatter God Parent Foundation on the front page of BirdTalk Magazine....?...HUH?
Lets talk.....

I do have a back up plan for long term disability, but do worry about something short term. I do have my pet sitter's name in my wallet (and she has a house key), but it is one of those 2 AM monsters that keep me up.......

& sponsorship, maybe from some of these petshops, or pet supply places?
How about Kaytee?
Do all of you know we all are being watched..by what we see as GUESTS...
There out there, there watching what we use for seed, Toys...even our bickering is being monitored.....why take a survey, fill out forms....these companies have folks scanning the web right now for marketing reasons, and Bird forums are being monitored...By all bird product companies....why not solicit donations from them?????
Think about this!!!!!

Thank you Arty for starting this topic I talked to my dear friend Dave tonight... He expressed concern today that he lives alone, and if something happened to him it could be days before anyone knew (not likely since I pester the poor man daily) That sparked the thought in me that "hey, something could happen to ME!". It had never occurred to me that dh and I could both be seriously injured and our birds would suffer, and no one would be able to get into the house.
I gave Dave the appropriate info to get into our house, and will give him a key next time I see him, and will send him an email w/ your info Arty, so you can take whatever birds you can (except Abbey-Jo, she goes to Dave) Thank you!
Dave and I worked out a mutually beneficial agreement..so if anything happens to one of us, the other knows who to contact to get in the house and get the birds out.
My concern is the volume of birds here...I *know* the rescue organization cannot handle taking in that many birds at once...that's why I contacted Arty.

My plan is to write something up about each bird - and *label their cages* with their names - and send it to at least Dave - probably Arty too, and Brenda from our local parrot store. If something happens to us, Dave will know within a short amount of time, and can call the other "godparronts" on the list, and either make arrangements for the birds to be fed/watered if it's a temporary thing, or get them out if we are both dead.

Thank you Arty for being willing to help if the worst happens

I agree, all bird owner should have information logged down, what there bird eats, behavior issues, dislikes, out of cage time, a basic history of everyday life.
I am just guessing here but lets say, $10.00 per card, hopefully each card will only take $5.00 to make and ship out, and the other 5 could go into a fund to help those that don't have a sponsor/god parent if something was to happen.
This is all for the birds.....they deserve this....
