Yay finally a small difference in philosophy between ~J~ and me! It's so rare!
Joel since the pair may throw unhealthy eggs at least in the beginning and it's off season now anyway, don't you think you could delay your "condition" till at least later when they are in bona fide breeding condition and give her a chance to at least find someone qualified? It's not that easy! Pretty please???
JDykstra, I agree with ~J~ and I always believe in two birds together in a pair male and female. Especially for this poor guy, Tiels are especially flock loving and wired for companionship 24/7.
For NOW, make sure he is getting a long, dark nights sleep no artificial lighting after about 3 pm and going to sleep with dusk and waking up at dawn. All year, actually. Like in nature. This may help. He's also going to be molting soon so there's a stress coming up on him that he'll need some help with.
I'd definitely get a mate, or as ~J~ suggested rehome to a HEAVILY INVESTIGATED experienced person, maybe even local. IMO two is as much work as one. And definitely in the same cage after a long introduction period. Unless they dont need it like my two. But it takes a careful and experienced eye (no offense) to judge if it's safe to put two together early-ish....I'd let the birds decide with two open cages and over time they will.
Forcing it may cause mate aggression from either side especially if he decides to try and push the issue.
I have a rescue friend here with an impeccable flock and she sometimes has unmatched Tiels she only has a small flock of them since she has bigger birds. She's flawless and a radical about proper care and natural surroundings. They have a gorgeous room and free all day. No fights everyone is great. The Tiels do bond and breed but she doesnt hatch the eggs (sorry Joel but it would be too many).
She has a vet who comes in on Sunday or any other time just for her because she's so excellent.
Sometimes one of her birds finds themselves the object of affection of two and it's lopsided. If you like, and can get to Pa. she may offer to take him depending....I can give you the info. You're sure he's male?
Let me know if you want and I'll facilitate you with her if you and ~J~ dont work out if it's too far....
