Default Our Special Needs Birds

I am starting this thread to share pics and stories of our “special needs” birds. If you have a special needs bird, and don’t worry what constitutes a “special needs” bird, please share.

I have two special needs birds.

My first Is Kona *points to avatar* she is almost a year and a half old toeless CAG. Deb here from PC handfed her and I fell in love. She gets around great and really doesnt have any age modifications at all. Climbs all ofer it and is a joy to have in my life!

Second Is Fiji. She didnt come to me Special needs. One day while I was at work she somehow escaped from her cage and Kona and her must of got into it through the bars. I came home to a bird without a beak. ALmost a year later and things are great! She eats lots of pellets, seeds and fresh foods and just needs frequent beak trims. She has improved alot!

Special needs birds are great, I would take another into my home in a heartbeat. They bring so much to your life.

Would love another special abled bird with partial toes. *steals pico and runs*

Wow, I had no idea. What does her beak look like now, does she have much of a beak?

I knew about Kona, but not Fiji. What kind of a bird is she?

Well I thought I had a special needs Budgie hen from the ASPCA. Bonded to a male. I could feel lipomas and when she got examined was told they couldnt estimate how long she'd live. She was flighted but not able to fly much, no stamina.

Pathetic feather, scrawny even now.

Guess what she's the first on OUT of the cage, flying around her heavy 45 gram body like crazy now, most vocal, most curious about her environment (most shy) but the one who enjoys life the most. You can see it. The outside birds dont miss her ears they yell back and forth.

Of course, now, that's because the brat Plet hen Piper has been trying to eliminate the hen and steal the spouse for a YEAR NOW. So I guess she's calling for a replacement mate.

So at this point, the only special need she has is the need to keep the brat away from her man.

I attribute her survival to flying, diet, Harrison's mash with seed am and fresh foods only with sprouts pm with some seed later on and Co Q10.

She is a green cheek conure. It happend about a year ago.

Ill get a picture of her beak now, let me go grab a picture from when it first happend and post it for you all. I actually still have her top portion where it was bitten off.

EDIT:

Here are the pictures.

The first one is right after it happend, maybe the next morning. The second was a couple months ago, you can see the growth. She got a beak trip shortly after. Since she cant shew wood like she used to the bottom tends to grow out

I've got a lot of special needs birds here...one-legged tiels, broken legged grey,
broken keel bone grey (new arrival)...I'll post about Pruitt though..

Pruitt is an age unknown BFA. Pruitt had hot oil thrown in his face years ago.
He has permanent feather loss, and only a clear eyelid on his eye. Passed from home to home due to severe aggression and constant screaming, his upper beak was broken off in his last foster home..he was screaming in a covered cage and a teenaged boy beat the front of the cage and broke Pruitt's beak off. I saw the cage - the entire front of it was bent in...I can only imagine what poor pruitt was thinking..

He hates everyone, but loves me. I can kiss him and scritch him and love on him. He cannot be out of cage if *anyone* else is in the house, or if any other birds are out. He has tried to kill dh more than once - the last time he *jumped* 21 ft to attack dh...

I love this bird to death...Dh has asked more than once for me to get rid of him...and every time I've told dh "I'll pack YOUR bags, and you can move out"
This bird is here to stay..no matter what.

wendy

I've heard Pruitt's story before. It still brings tears to my eyes. I'm so glad he has a forever home with you- the poor guy has been through too much.
