#1 | | | I can be sooo stupid sometimes! This is my "I am a truly bad Parront" thread. But first of all, relax. No one got hurt, thank goodness, but no thanks to me. Kind of a long story, but bear with me. The day before yesterday, my roommate decided to wash and wax the kitchen floor. The kitchen and living room are all one big room, and the fids are in the living room. Later in the afternoon, I had Quito and Tausi out for their daily out of cage and treat time as usual. At the usual time, I covered everyone up and put them to bed. About 5 minutes later, Tausi had a whale of a panic. I heard him screaming and flopping around in his cage, like a "night-fright", which he has never had a problem with. I went running out to see what the problem was, opened the cover on the front of his cage, and there he was huddled in the corner trembling, with that "I'm scared, I don't know you, what the heck is going on" look. You know the one. I spent several minutes with him, trying to calm him down. Looked all through his cage, but couldn't see any reason. Seemed like he was inconsolable, and when I tried to cover the front of the cage again, he panicked again. Then I happened to look up, and it finally registered. The ceiling fan was still going!! Then it really hit me. I had Quito and Tausi both out of the cage, and Quito flies all over the house. I shut the fan off, and had to go sit for a minute, with scenes of what could have happened running through my head. How many times have I preached disabling any ceiling fans if you have birds? How could I have had them out and not noticed that the fan was going? How was Quito savvy enough to avoid the fan? I remembered Quito and Tausi acting a little bit "off" somehow when I'd had them out, why didn't I tumble to it then? How could I be so stupid?
Anyway, evidently the cause for Tausi's panic was the fan moving enough air to make the sheet covering his cage flutter a bit. After the fan was off, he settled down and slept through the night just fine. I slept ok too, but it took a while longer to get there. |

I looked at the surroundings through his eyes to see if I could spot what was causing him alarm and finally spotted my error.
All was forgiven with a few treats and extra Mommy time. |

Nate -- thanks for the reminder about celing fans. This is the time of year that we all could use that reminder! And btw, so glad you figured out what was bothering Tausi....there have been times when I have not been so lucky! |
