Default Open Up Top Cage Idea

I have always been paraniod about open up top cages. Since we bought some, I figured I had two choices, 1. wire them shut or two, figure out a safe way to use them. I chose option number two and immediatly got to work. The first most important thing was to make sure the fids can't open them when they are closed. I bought some SS clips (like what I use for Harley's toys since she destroys the actual ones that come with the toys). They look almost like what a mountain climber would use with the push in clip. I hooked it on either 'door' on the open up top and double checked to be sure Echo couldn't push her head through. It works! She can't undo it or get her head/beak/feet stuck. Now for when it's open. I wanted the girls to be able to use the space in the safest way. I used the same kind of clips and fastened one to the movable part and one to the solid. It isn't going anywhere! Thank goodness the perches that came with them are a little too big. They fit in between them really well and it's quite solid. I don't plan to leave them up when I can't be right there. I am still too scared to leave them alone with them open, but al least it's safe enough so they can't escape and they can't fall in on themselves! I thought I would put this idea out there for those of you with open up top cages!

...They make cages that open from the top? I've never heard of that.

Yes. Unfortunatly, they are known for caving in and creating a safety hazzard for the birds.

why would you buy one then? You have a welder in the family who can alter the cage to your specifications?

I bought mine because I love the cage and unfortunatly, most Napolion top cages have this. Most people wire it shut. No, I don't have a welder and it can't really be fixed.

I prefer the standard flat top cage with a play area on top.

I'm glad you made the cages safe for your girls. Those open top cages always have scared me. But I love all the extra room they get in the top of those cages. I wonder how much it would cost to have a welder do it though. They wouldn't have to weld very much of it.

Yea, it wouldn't be too hard. We have to get Echo's old play top re welded. I just wonder how they would do it...

Lulu has an open-top cage but I don't use the top so it always stays shut and locked (she can't unlock it).

Dom, do you have a pic of your setup with the open tops?

Here's a pic of the metal clips. Unfortunatly, PC won't let me upload TIFF files, cand I can't change the file. I can try to get another pic though!
