Default Confusion!

Ok, so at the bird show there was a grey breeder. She has a TAG and two CAG's. Well, one of the babies had a LOT of red factor on her and was also much bigger that the other baby Congo. Now, Echo is a small bird, so I have no doubt this baby was like Echo. However, the red factor baby the breeder defined as a 'Cameroon' grey. I know there was a lot of controversy over this and I have heard a lot about Cameroons. Some say they are bigger, darker versions of CAG's and now there's one with TONS of red factor and is bigger and is a Cameroon as well.

So, is it just a larger redder Congo or is there something to this 'Cameroon' thing?

It depends on which side of the border the bird was originally caught on. There are only 2 species. TAG and CAG. Red factor is mutation, some thing like a green quaker or a blue quaker.

I read in Bird Talk about six months ago that with the red facter they are concidered to be a mutation. I don't know.

I have read that Cameroon's are a marketing gimmick and that there are only two types: The TAG and CAG. I really don’t know for sure, but it would be hard to believe there would be a 3rd sub species with only minimum differences.

To me, Cameroons are CAGs caught from the Cameroon region which is were the name comes from to begin with.

Is the red factor a baby trait? or something they keep for life? I am wondering if Scarlett's will molt out.

Bella's extra little red on her molted out and there's only a few little red feathers left on her body.

I think it's usually a baby trait. Most birds typically molt out their red during their first molt. A true red factor is one who keeps their red feathers for life. Ollie had lots of red when she was little. Now it's all gone 'cept for her pretty little tail!
