Default Jean Luc Picard needs a playmate -_-

Already posted about the lack of a registration for him. Found his ID tags for the AKC thing and all that... still waiting for the NJ people to contact me back about getting some registration papers. It's been like 4 days, emailed em, called em, don't know if it's because of the area code. Anyway, I'm still eyeballing shelters and while I know Jean probably would like someone to mate with...maybe a playmate would go better. Keep in mind that I will never own a cockatiel so that suggestion is off the list. I'm phobic of them, lobsters, zombies, etc. I want a bird that can be semi independant and mayhaps someday be able to be kept in a 4 by 2.5 by 3 foot cage.(Grandpa is a welder I figure if I can't find a cage to my specifications when I go visit for christmas I'll just ask him for the blowtorch and go make my own.) I'm only looking for ONE. I am thinking a sun conure...and if I get this other bird I'm looking to aquire it before fall, hoping for a female and something not too big. If all else fails I can fall back on getting just a female sunny from a shelter and go through the joys of pestering the NJ GF&WL people for a permit application. My teacher owns a ferrit in NJ and that requires a permit and he's got the reciept that it's been paid....but he's never ever gotten the papers back that says she's registered. Maybe it got lost but I'm concerned about what I could possibly find there at a shelter that might be a good friend for my sweet Jean. I don't want a CLINGER please...if you know any species that are notoriously clingy or exceptionally noisey don't suggest em. But I trust your guy's opinions so know I am going to take them very seriously. Those restrictions in place, this is what is illegal in NJ:

The following information is in accordance with N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.3.

(a) Exotic species and nongame species requiring a permit for possession include, but are not limited to the following:

I. BIRDS

Red-fronted Parrot - Amazona viridigenalis
Turquoise-fronted Parrot - Amazona aestiva
Yellow-cheeked Parrot - Amazona a. autumnalis
Half-moon Conure - Aratinga canicularis eburnirostrum
Jenday Conure - Aratinga jandaya
Sun Conure - Aratinga solstitialis <----Jean
Nanday Conure - Nandayus nenday
African/Timneh Gray Parrot - Psittacus erithacus
Macaws - Ara spp. & Anodorhynchus spp. (Except endangered forms)

II. BIRDS (You cannot have these birds in the state)

Ring–necked Parakeets
Monk (Quaker) Parakeets
Patagonian Conures

About the banned species, the permit or him needing someone to hang out with while I'm pulling double duty shift working, night school?

Well, since you don't want a clingy bird, I don't recommend a grey! Echo can be very clingy at times. She can play 'independently' in the sense she will get into everything. Basically, a very needy bird. She follows me around everywhere and only does this to me.

Macaws, also pretty needly. Beautiful birds, but even the smaller ones are demanding.

Green cheek conures some to mind... Not known to be clingy or loud and very sweet. I would looking into them. I hope everybody else has some good suggestions

If it's a companion I would always say the same type of bird opposite gender if you can. Then you have a true pair as nature intended. They will know what to do from there. (once they are "bonded" and getting along).

Of course some birds dont get along right away but IMO it's how we introduce them. They are flock loving and wired for constant companionship.

Getting a different type of bird is a problem when they are hormonal. Since procreation is a biological imperative it's very difficult for them. To not be able to mate.

If there is egg laying you just swap with fakes or freeze their own and replace them. They lose interest. And it's only once a year if you do it right. IF at all.....

Cindy has an excellent point. I would get another Sun, if possible. Unfortunatly, most people don't introduce their birds to each other correctly. If you decide to get another sun, I would get one of similar age to the one you already have. I have heard people having an older bird and getting a baby, wanting them to become a bonded pair. The unfortunate part is adults act differently than babies, and babies don't quite get it. This means the adult can get frusterated/angry and reject (or worse) the baby. I would definatly get one of similar age, if possible.

I had a GCC that died just after christmas, he was handi-capable. I was wanting to get a second one...But that's right they might want to cross breed and I have no idea what a Sun/Green conure would look like. I'm going to wait and pool more ideas from some more members before jumping on something. Thank you for responding so soon

I think the best choice is another sun. A GCC is a lot smaller a may get hurt. I am biased towards suns.

I would get the same type bird if it is for a companion. So another sun in your case. Although I adore Nandays, but mine is very clingy.

...would you believe Nandays scare me too? The all black faces and big yellowish eyes just completely make me want to walk the other way.

EDIT: Not saying I don't believe they're wonderful birds. Just they're up there on the list with cockatiels I just forgot to put em up there because I didn't think someone would suggest em XD

I found out from another thread that Patsnest works with an adoption agency so when I get home to NJ tomorrow I'll fill out an adoption paper and get on the list for a female sunny. Would you believe it though? She placed a female sunny 2 weeks ago and I TOTALLY missed my shot Ah well, there's got to be another girl sometime.
