My name is denise and i just brought home our beautiful 3 month old timneh friday afternoon from the airport! What a thrill even though he did not think it was. Ohhhh the growling!! Once i spoke to him he settled down quite quickly and before we made it to the driveway he was preening.
The last 3 days have been a challenge. Actually this is the first day he sat on top his playpen shredding up his shredding strip and playing with his blocks. He has hardly made a peep. The only things he really wants to eat are of course sunflower seeds and apples. I just keep filling his bowl up with fruits and veges and he just keeps throwing them(ha)
As far as handling him he will step up but if i keep near to the cage he reaches down and clamps down on my finger. When he does this i just take it because if i put him back on the cage i feel he will learn that is all he has to do to get me to put him down!!
I spoke with the owners of his clutchmate which have had theirs for 2 days longer and they already have had a harness on him and have taken him outside. I know each bird has it's own personality and i will persevere! I just wish i could get him to trust me enough to cuddle him without being bitten and i know hopefully that will come with time. Thanks for reading and any tips will be appreciated!!
Oh by the way, we named him Jazz (he came from louisianna)
Congratulations! Are you working on mixing some pellets or a good quality seed mix in with the sunflower seeds? Sunflower seeds are a horrible diet all by themselves, actually, they can't really even be coined a "diet". I'm surprised there are even breeders still out there weaning their babies onto sunflower seeds!
You are doing right by ignoring his nips and not putting him down. You have the right idea! Just keep at it, he'll come around!
The first day i just let him eat the sunflower seeds so atleast he would have something in him. I mix a couple seeds into all his pellets and fruits and veges The only thing he seems to like so far are apples and corn.
I know what you mean about breeders giving them seed. Why do they even start it, why not pelletts?
We live in illinois by the way.
Thanks for the encouragement. We just sat in the living room for awhile. He seemed to enjoy it. He will eventually spend his entire evening in there. I am just letting him and the 2 dogs see each other which is actually going pretty well but they will NEVER be left unattended together no matter what
Welcome to PC Denise and Jazz! I would definitley try and get him off the sunflower seeds. Maybe try introducing some pellets. And he is still so young and new to your home I think he just needs to settle in more.
Welcome fellow TAG owner! Great to have you here at PC. There is so much great advice and info on this forum. You will love it here for sure! If you have any questions ask away. Everyone enjoys sharing their knowledge.
Thank to everyone for making us feel so welcome!!!
Jazz is being a tad more vocal today. Oh those sweet baby sounds!!! I let him see himself in the mirror and that's when he really started in. He closed his eyes half way and kept beaking the mirror. I know he thinks it was his clutchmate. I'll post some pixs real soon!
