Default Lara

Need some advice from you. A customer this evening had some questions on his Galerita Galerita and their noise. He has two and said that one is screaming a lot lately. The other is very quiet. He also has an Eleanora and she is very quiet, also.

Any suggestions?

PS - Off topic, but the breeder of the two Galerita Galeritas is our mutual friend K.M. and the Eleanora is from our other mutual friend Nancy S!)

I feel like I'm making headway in knowing and being able to recognize the different species of parrots, and then you go and mention one that I've never even heard of! Off to research....

(Sorry for butting in! )

I'll make it a little easier for you. Camille - they are spectacular! These birds were flight trained when they came in. I closed off the doors to our visiting room (which is probably about 20 x 30) and let them fly around. They were like butterflies!

Anyway, here is a link: Galerita Galerita Cockatoo

120 years life expectancy?? 100% talk?? They sure sound spectacular! I can't believe I've never heard of them before now.

On the screaming: Could it be hormonal? Depending on age and sex...?

Edit: Okay, so I looked up Images on google. They look very similar to Sulfur Crested toos. Are they one and the same??

Kathie,

I'm not assuming I can answer your questions but I have a few for your customer. I suppose I would start with what are the age and the sex? Those answers will bring up the next set of questions.

Camille, a Galerita is of the sulfer crested and has one of the most spectacular displays (in my opinion but I think that of the u2 and m2 also but not a S.C.). I just went and saw a breeding pair a couple of weeks ago. I was immediately drawn to her display. Here's a photo of her display....crest and wings! She was a beauty.

I imagine that they are about 1 1/2 years old now. Both are males.

Are those pictures from where I think they are?

You betcha!!!

You know, I just came back to add something I forgot. From what I have read....with a lot of the larger cockatoos (I've only read this or heard it from breeders about M2's, black palms and the galeritas) that they can be easily imprinted by humans. Kathie, my guess would be that the vocal galerita has become bonded to the owner, hence his calling to him. I've heard this is a problem with breeding pairs of certain cockatoos. Too much human interaction and they become too easily attached to humans over their mates and therefore refuse to mate. Now that is with a mating pair but I suspect the vocal one has become overly bonded to it's owner.

The picture you posted may have been the parent to these two! How cool is that????

Anyway, I will mention to him what you suggested - thanks! I also suggested that perhaps he come to see Barbara Heidenreich in August. I told him to try to reward the noisy one for positive behavior and to try to ignore the screaming (I know it is hard). He was hoping that he would "just grow out of it." I told him I thought not. He seems to do everything right - makes them play independently, mixes up their schedules, teaches them to be independent. He thought perhaps the noisy one was jealous of the Eleanora. Apparently the other one will play with the Eleanora, but this one wants no parts of her.

Are you going to see Nancy S. anytime soon? PM me and let me know how it went with K. Isn't she just the most wonderful breeder/person?
