Default Pionus Anyone?

Hey Y'all..... I rarely hear any of us speaking about Pionus. I am also wondering why more of us do not keep them?

Reason I brought this topic up tonight is because I have a chance to get a Blue Headed Pionus and am wondering if anyone has any experience with same - any pros or cons to keeping this species. I have only heard good things about them.

I can Google info. but I aways like to hear of first hand experiences. Any help? ... Thanks.

I know I would want one. I have met a couple and they were quiet, reserved birds. Cute as bugs.

None have come up for sale in my area and none of the breeders I know, do the blue heads. Just the dusky headed ones.

I have a maximillian pionus. She is a wonderful, wonderful bird. I can't rave about her enough. She has an even temperment, very laid back, especially in contrast to the 2 caiques. She is very loyal and when I'm upset the one who upset me is in trouble. Ruby is about the size of small amazon and I'm told she is big for a pi. She and I are devoted to each other.

She is very quiet and rarely scream, and when she does make noise, it is not high pitched, but very low similar to a bass. She will make her presence known, especially if she hears me, but otherwise very quiet. She love to chew and chews her toys well.

My pi talks, but it is gravelly and can be a little hard to distinguish. She loves to say "luv u" and "momma girl" "good girl" "hello".

My wb caique is a terror in the spring summer (agressive nasty during this time of the year) but Ruby is very laid back. The only thing that she does and it does get annoying is that she'll bend low on me or her perch and kinda snap her wings and I'll call it singing, but I've heard it called the pi mating call at me. If you ignore that it does go away. She does not scream like my caique does nor does she bite.

I've never had a blue headed pi, they are beautiful. The ones I've handled had a high pitch to their call than my maxi, but from what I understand they are a sweet tempered.

People don't keep them cause they're considered "drab" by most. I have one, she's the SWEETEST bird you'll meet.....as long as you don't get close to her cage.

I agree they are far from drab and photos do not do them justice. In pictures they tend (at least the maxis) to look like green birds, but in person wow. They have very subtle coloration.

My maxi has the deep blues of a bh pi, as well as scales similar to the whitecapped and beautiful underfeathers in her tail of ruby red (where she got her name), striking blues of the bronze wings and a wonderful subtle bronze overlay on her entire body. It does not come thru in pictures. To me they are most beautiful.
