Default My Saturday in a house full of 'too's :)

Sorry this is so long and boring...but here I go...
Today I cleaned Jan's (she's a member of the bird club i'm in) bird room like I will be doing every two weeks for now on. She has 2 moluccan cockatoos, 4 umbrella cockatoos, 1 goffin cockatoo, 1 amazon, 1 sun conure, and 1 jenday conure. Well, it took me 4 1/2 hours to clean the room...COCKATOO'S MAKE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH DUST!!!!! and she stays on top of it too, I couldn't even imagine what it would be like if you just let it accumulate for a while, or not having all those air purifiers! Well, in those 4.5 hours, I got to talk to and have conversations with all the birds. You know how you are just drawn to certain birds, well, I am absolutely stuck to the one M2, Sammy. He has one wing (other was removed because of tumor, she said he was trying to chew his wing off to get rid of the pain...poor baby and he has to wear a collar because he is a mutilater (when you take the collar off he looks just like any other fully feathered, gorgeous M2, but you move some feathers away and you see his scar from where he really went at his chest because he had some disease and had to get an injection in his chest muscle, well the vet pulled the syringe a little too soon and some of the medicine got on his chest which really irritated (I think she said it hurt his skin a little) Sammy so he had started chewing at his chest to the point that it would be an open wound. Well, years later, if he doesn't have a collar on (which he acts like a normal bird with it on) he will still mutilate that part of his chest (she takes it off of him all the time for hour periods so he can preen himself and then she puts it back on, he doesn't bother it if it is only off for a couple hours). So picture a 1025 gram M2, with one wing, a cute oversized neclace on, and huge black eyes seemingly full of all the love and knowledge in the world, staring at you saying "give me a scritch", Jan and her husband just kept saying he is just reeling me in for the kill lol She said he doesn't like a lot of people but I finally got to hold him at the very end since we were getting along so well, and we did fantastic together! He just curled up against my body letting me pet through his massive amount of down feathers under his wing. Jan said I HAVE TO (lol) take him when she dies or gets too old to take care of her birds, as long as I am able to (having a BG who don't do too well with the dust), by the time that time comes, I plan to have a lot of things set in my life where I would have the ability to house both safely (ohh my mind is full of ideas for my future and animals hehehe my head could explode any minute, but then all those ideas would be lost...so I'll try not to explode) and if it won't work out, she has a plan B for her birds.
Oh, and she also said I would have to take Scarlett, their sun conure as well. Jan said Scarlett likes her husband and ONLY her husband and was completely surprised to see, me, yes me, not her husband, giving scritches to Scarlett's pretty little belly and head. I don't think I would take her though (unless she couldn't find a more than worthy place to go), I have a hard time dealing with the loud, high pitched calls they make, absolutely gorgeous birds but those tiny little bodies and tiny little beaks can let out some yells...

All the birds today were awesome but it was so great coming home to a bird that was super excited to seeeee.....MEEE! What a good birdie

I admire you Glider. You are a hard worker and so absolutely devoted to birds. Wish you lived closer. I'd hire you in a heartbeat!

Sounds like a lot of fun! There is a too owner in my neighborhood (though her ex took him ) and she was saying how much dust he produces. It must be cleaned every day to keep everything from looking white, lol.

I think toos are amazing birds, they look so...elegant, proud, like princes, but one think I do dislike, is all that dust. At least their dust is white! Could you imagine if they made brown dust???

You 'too owners out there, how bad is it for you dealing with the dust? If you put air purifiers in the room (like one under their cage, out of reach of course) and dust regularily, how bad is it? I think having one or to cockatoo's would be fairly easy to manage dust wise but I could be completely wrong...
