Default What to tell the birdsitter?

We are going on vacation next week and will be gone 8 days. A friend of ours will be watching the birds. What should I include in his instructions? He has never had a bird before. We were going to leave them at the breeder but she wanted us to bring our cages and that is way too hard and we would have to make two trips at 45 minutes each way, so that is out.

I wrote out a 3 page memo the first time I left Humph! These are some of the things I included:

-Food - how much, how often, which foods at which times, etc. Treats - which ones, how often, etc. You have multiple birds, so their individual food and treat preferences would be important.

-You need to explain bedtime - what the ritual is that they are used to and what time they go to bed and get up, as well as the morning routine.

- Will the birds be bathed during the time you're away? If so, explain the procedure.

- Personality quirks of each bird, their likes and dislikes. For instance, Humphrey hates red, and is frightened of it, so I'd tell a birdsitter not to wear red if it was possible in my instructions. What kinds of things does each of your birds like and dislike?

- What should he do when he goes out? Leave the radio or television on? Give a chew toy?

I"ll see if I can find my document and see what I included!

Thanks! I left about a page and a half of instructions for him with tips for each bird. I am so scared for Danny and I hope he does well with a new person.

Tiffany- If I were closer! I would love to come see your birdies, but, I'm about 45 mintues and carless...

I wrote a three page essay explaining every deatail to my parents (whom I live with, lol). Tell them about your routein and things that your birds cannot deal with. Explain bad foods and no no's. Also, leave all the emergency numbers just in case...

Can you also leave a family members number, in addition to the vet, in case of an emergency?

How about covering their cages?

Yeah I left my MIL's info and another friends info who can take care of them in an emergency. And I will show him how to cover the cages.

Ditto what everyone else said. You can also sign him up for PC so he can post in case he has any questions.
