Default Microchipping saves the day!

A customer stopped in tonight to buy a new cage. Why? Because his bare eyed cockatoo, who flew away 10 months ago, was returned to him today!!! He was microchipped! The person who found him apparently had a vet run the bird and he was traced back to his owner!

That's fantastic news! My AV said she's never heard of a microchipped bird being returned to its person in the 20 some-odd years she's been a vet. I think this is great to know, and validates my decision to have my own Goons 'chipped.

Amazing she survived this area (N.E.) for 10 months! Thank goodness someone had the common sense to have her scanned!

i'm considering microchipping valo and bella... i've to read up on it, and also ask the vet about it since they're so small.... however, i think there's a TGF event coming up where my vet actually does the microchipping for low costs.... might take the fids there

She may have escaped (again) from the person who found her - after she escaped the first time. May not have been in the wild all that time?

I think vets should all own a scanner and automatically scan each and every bird brought in for anything, then not release it until the person that shows up on the scan can be contacted - unless maybe the person that brings it in has a valid receipt for it's purchase and can prove where they live etc....

Wonderful news!

Mine are both chipped. I am a big fan of chipping and removing bands that can cause injury.

Bee - I have chipped a sun conure no problem.... size is ok.

Wonderful news! I am considering getting the fids chipped just in case, though their wings are clipped. Such a great story!

That's great to hear. Ollie will be getting microchipped sometime. I'm not looking forward to putting her through another vet trip, but eventually we'll get it done.
