Default The Great Billed Parrot

This is a parrot I rarely, well have never heard anyone talk about. Does anyone have one? Does anyone know of anyone that has one. I have a picture of one hanging in my workshop because I find their looks fascinating.

I just did a quick search on them and read bits and pieces about them. They sound like a pretty cool bird. Anyone know much about them?

I'm hoping someone responds. I think I may have the opportunity to get one in. Would love to know about them.

Thanks - I'll have to go in and read that! Looks like lots of information. Better check to make sure they are legal in NJ.

Thanks for posting that link Lara. It was very interesting. I've only read the first one, ("Getting Together - The Great-Billed Parrot" by Diana Holloway) but it was fascinating. They do sound like very interesting birds

I read somewhere not long ago that they MAY be related to Eclectus. I think they are an awesome looking bird.

I don't know tons about them, but I know they can be very playful and are good at keeping themselves entertained. They are BIG chewers! I don't know about this species, but I believe Indian Ring Necks are related to the Eclectus.
The Great Bills are similar in temperment to the Alexandrine and IRN. They are not terribly social and don't like to be 'petted', but can certainly be more inclined to adapt to social situations with lots of 'outside' exposure at an early age. They can bond with more than one person and they're delightful to hear 'chatter' to each other as babies.
Susanne Cochran of Avalon Aviary in Loveland, CO breeds them and I just got to see two babies last month. They are adorable, but not small. lol I'm afraid this is about all I know but they are supposed to be wonderful companions: fiercely loyal.
