As some of you know, we are putting in [raw] teak hardwoods. It's beautiful and is completly raw, but you wouldn't think so. I was wondering, would it be bird safe? It is said be 2.87% stronger than American Red Oak (great in our house) and it grows in the forests of Brazil. I thought, because it's so strong, Harley would have a blast chewing on it, but I'm nervous. Everywhere I have looked for answers doesn't say anything about it, it doesn't even list it. What do yall think? Thanks!!!

I can't seem to find much either, Dominique. I know that Teak has a high oil content, and can cause toxic/allergic reactions in people working with it (sanding dust, etc.). Interesting that the links for bird safe/bird toxic woods don't seem to mention it at all.

I don't see it on any safe wood list.

If it's not actually ON a safe wood list, then I wouldn't chance it.

Teak is magnolia, it is not on the safe list but it is not on the toxic list either. There is simply no data, so maybe not worth the possible risk.

thats why I didn't make stands and toys out of left over umbrella parts last year. I couldn't find Teak on a list.

I have worked with a LOT of teak in boat building and repair- It is very oily, and is an irritant (especially the dust) to many people. People often develop allergies to it- Nasty ones. The reaction is like poison ivy, with skin breakouts and breathing problems, etc.

Also- Teak is not native to Brazil- It is native to Asia, it was imported to the region to be grown on plantations.

I Don't think I would try it with birds!

It's Brazillian Teak- not the regular teak. I am so confused! This is like a never ending process. Some people say it's fine, others don't, I just wish there was a solid answer. Oh well, if there is one, we'll still have plenty of wood, lol
