#1 | | | Have a Little Faith in Me! When the road gets dark
and you can no longer see.
Have a little faith in me.
When the tears you cry
are all you can believe.
Have a little faith in me.
And when your backs against the wall
just turn around and you, you will see.
Have a little faith, faith in me.
I've loved you for such a long, long time
expecting nothing in return.
Just for you to have a little faith in me.

Paddy (Pigeon number NPS.43.9451)[1] was an Irish pigeon awarded the Dickin Medal after being the first pigeon to arrive back in England with news of the success of the D-Day invasion, out of hundreds dispatched. He flew 230 miles across the English Channel in four hours and five minutes[citation needed], the fastest recorded crossing, and was awarded the medal on 1 September 1944, just under three months after the crossing.[2] The medal citation reads,
"For the best recorded time with a message from the Normandy Operations, while serving with the RAF in June, 1944."
His medal was sold at auction for almost £7,000 in September 1999.[3] Paddy (pigeon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cher Ami (French for "Dear Friend" (male form)) was a famous homing pigeon who was owned and flown by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France during World War I. He helped save the Lost Battalion of the 77th Division in the battle of the Argonne, October 1918. In his last mission, he delivered a message despite having been shot through the breast. The bird was awarded the Croix de Guerre, for heroic service delivering 12 important messages in Verdun.
He is enshrined in the Smithsonian Institution, and is currently on display with Sergeant Stubby in the National Museum of American History's "Price of Freedom" exhibit Cher Ami - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

G.I. Joe (March 24, 1943 in Algiers - June 3, 1961 in Detroit) is possibly one of the most famous pigeons in world history, serving much of its life in the United States Army Pigeon Service as one of over 54,000 pigeons in the force.
In World War II, G.I. Joe saved the lives of the inhabitants of the village of Calvi Vecchia, Italy, and of the British troops stationed there. The village was scheduled to be bombarded by the Allied forces on 18 October 1943, but the message that the British had captured the village, delivered by G.I. Joe, arrived just in time to avoid the bombing. Over a thousand people were saved.
In November 1946, G.I. Joe was presented with a high award, the Dickin Medal for gallantry. G.I. Joe (pigeon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dickins Medal is awarded to animals of the Commonwealth (formerly British Empire) and is the equivalent of the VC - Dickins winners
English pigeon: Mary of Exeter: In 5 yrs war service received 22 stitches (a lot for a small animal) Attacked by hawk in 1942 while carrying a message - got home needing 7 stitches. Five months later was shot under wing while carrying message - shotgun pellets remove and stitched up again. During blitz of Exeter a bomb exploded near her loft blowing her basket to bits but she stayed waiting for her owner.Missing in action for 10 days she was picked p from a field nearly dead wounded from top of her head to her back. The muscles were so torn she had to have a collar to hold her head up. She did another two years on active service.
Australia - two pigeons in Bouganville carrried messages requesting artillery fire to repel attack. Two hours through tropical storm and heavy gunfire
English/US - Cher Ami carried message that saved the Lost Battalion in France. Fired on he lost his leg to shrapnel which also passed through his breast but flew the 40 km home in 25 mins (No medal but idolised by his handlers)
GI Joe - only non British bird to win the Dickens (but he was attached to English 10 Corps HQ in Italy) The 56th Infantry asked for air support to soften up Colvi Vecchia when they suddenly broke through. All communications were down so GI Joe was released with a message to stop the bombers taking off. He flew the 20 miles in 20 minutes through gunfire and is credited with saving the lives of the 1000 troops who had got into the town.
I have given my life so you can live yours, does this sound familiar?

No Pigeons as Pets in Chicago
The American Racing Pigeon Union says that Chicago is the only city that bans pet pigeons and that it's not fair. On Thursday, a US Circuit Courts of Appeals judge upheld a lower ruling on the ban against some claims by enthusiasts that the ordinance is unconstitutional. Karl Wollenhaupt, who is a member of the Chicago racing pigeon club, says "This sport has been in existence for hundreds of years, but the city says these birds are bad, dirty and evil. These are birds of pedigree."
The case pitted the property rights of about 70 members of Chicago's pigeon-racing club, the Greater Chicago Combine and Center, against their neighbors who complained about the cooing noise, tons of scattered feathers, and droppings everywhere. The ruling said that balancing the interests of pigeon club members and their neighbors was not the court's role.
What do you think? Should people be able to keep and race pigeons? Are we more prejudiced against them in cities because we see the "wild" ones making messes everywhere? It seems like even these trained & vaccinated pets were making a mess of the neighborhood, so why should they be allowed
I clean up the messes left behind by the human, after all I need to live out my life also, I struggle each day to find food to live another day. Chicagoist: No Pigeons as Pets in Chicago

#10 | | | Re: Have a Little Faith in Me! Never in the history of mankind has there been any animal that has saved so many human lives as that of the Pigeon.
Mankind’s history of keeping pets has been noted, the first animal to be kept as a pet was the PIGEON.
In the scriptures (if you are spiritual) it is said that Noah released the DOVE and behold the Dove returned with an olive branch signaling that land was near.
The human has deemed me the bird of PEACE and yet they slaughter me as if my life has no meaning.
Why do the humans forsaken me?, Do they not know the love I carry within for them, do they not know I am drawn to them?, Have they forgotten I have been by there side since the beginning of time? Mass of Dead Birds Found in Downtown Austin, Texas - Associated Content Pigeon Wars - New York Times
