Default What is Lineolated Parakeet?

I was asked this question...

What is Lineolated Parakeet? Why is it different from a Parakeet?

And thought it deserved it's own thread.

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Psittaciformes (Parrots or psittacines)
Family: Psittacidae

======
(Lineolated)

Genus: Bolborhynchus
Species: lineola
======

(Budgerigar)

Genus: Melopsittacus
Species: undulatus
======

Generally accepted distinctions are:

A parrot is any hookbilled bird having a short, squared tail.
A parakeet is any hookbilled bird having a long, pointed tail.

Budgie, and most grass Parakeets, come from Australia, and the Lineolated comes from Central and South America. The Linnie is also larger and heaver than a Budgie.

Parakeet is a misclassification of the Linnie, it seems to me they should be classified as a Parrot. In which a lot of Linnie people agree.
We are checking into ways of changing this classification (if possable) with the Lineolated Parakeet Society

Linnies hold their food with their foot while they chew on it, as do most Parrots, I don't think Budgies or other kinds of Parakeets do that.

Other Linnie characteristics:

Linnies like to hang upside down,

They walk with a foot over foot waddle, And the angler way they perch is so cute,

OH and when frightened the flaring of their tails, & the freeze thing, when frightened...they just freeze as if they were dead...

They like to hide under things, when out of the cage... you always have to look before you sit... they love to hide under pillows, blankets, papers...

I hope this gives you some insight into the Linnie world..

Great post Denise - I was just thinking last week why they were classified as Parakeets since they don't have long tails! I agree that it's a misclassification.

While my budgie (Jerry) does not hold food with his feet, he does grab ahold of toys with his feet while he chews on them.
