Quito's such a Quaracter She's been such a hoot lately! When I let her and Tausi out in the afternoon, I clean cages, change water bowls, hand out treats, etc. Tausi pretty much stays on his hanging gym, but Quito is just everywhere, flying between cage top, playgym, kitchen counter, kitchen table, and me. I'll be washing water bowls, and she's hanging upside down twirling around from my t-shirt sleeve hanging by one foot, doing her best to turn her little self inside out, clucking away like a little chicken, eyes going all "wonky". Loves to flip herself all around, rubbing her head on my arm, preening my arm hairs, and every once in a while giving me a patented GC pinch just to get my attention.
She's so jealous, I have to be aware of where she is all the time. Bend down to clean inside a cage and brace myself by grabbing the top of the cage, and before you know it she's nibbling on my hand. She recalls really well for treats, but as soon as she has the treat, she's gone! Then when its time to go back in the cage, we have to play the "catch the little green chicken" game. She always steps up perfectly, and will start to ride back to the cage just fine. Then when we're almost there, off she goes, back on the playstand. We usually have to repeat this four or five times, until she decides I'm not going to give up. I could easily cover her with my other hand to get her in, but I figure she'll get the idea to fly away from me when I want her to step up. It only takes a few trips before she'll stay put on my finger and go into her cage. When she does go in, its best not to let your finger linger too long, because she's in full "hissy" mood then, and will let you know just how she feels about the situation!
Then she gets a treat and all is forgiven, and she usually has a nice bath in her nice clean water bowl! Green Cheeks are just the most wonderful, frustrating, loving, affectionate and feisty little birds. Hard to believe such a big personality can live in such a tiny package. |
