Default Recipe for Homemade Avicakes

I just came across this recipe for making your own avicakes and thought I would share with everyone. I have not personally made these myself but think I will try out soon.

HOMEMADE AVICAKES

Mix the following ingredients together:

2 cups crushed cereal..... (Cheerios Shredded Wheat, Wheat Chex....)
1 cup crushed pellets

1 cup instant oatmeal
2 1/2 cups assorted seeds and raisins

Add about 1 and a quarter cups of Honey
Stir untill mixture is wet but not dripping
You may need to adjust the honey. you can also use corn syrup if you don't like the honey
Pour it onto a cookie sheet and spread it out
Bake at very low.... like 200 - 225 for about 45 minutes

* Break into small chunk size servings and freeze

This sounds good, I made something similar with peanutbutter, honey, seeds, pellets etc and put in cones. It is a hit.

Thanks for the recipe Kelly. I wonder if Molasses would work also. I know the Lafeber products use Molasses.

I wonder if molasses would work better since it's thicker. Hey, you know what I was thinking, this could also be a good mixture to make your own foraging toys. Shove this into golf ball size wiffle balls. Good size foraging toy for a macaw.

Take a dowel, sized to fit your bird. Cut it into a 4" strip for small birds, 7" for medium and 12" for large birds. Drill holes through the dowel, all the way through, in the size according to your bird, and stuff full of this mixture. Hang with an eye hook and c-clamp. Good foraging toy.

Lara, I think I might try molasses when I make this stuff up -- seems like a healthier alternative to honey. And I love the foraging idea. I can see many of my birds going nuts over that!

Honey and molasses would be equally nutritous, the real problem is corn syrup. Both honey and molasses have trace element value and nutritional benefits far beyond corn syrup. Many animals have trouble metabolizing corn syrup. Some nutritionists feel that corn syrup is the new transfats and will be the subject of a lot of controversy shortly. Don't know about that, but given the choice, I would opt for molasses then honey.
