Default What is the matter with him??

Winkie is 8 mths now, has been molting a little & now all his tail feathers are getting broken off about a quarter inch from his follicles. When they break they only break halfway through & then wave around in all directions. It's very frustrating. Can anyone explain?

Do the feathers wave in different directions, or the broken feather shaft?

I have 5 & 6 year old P'let... I have never seen this happen..
Would he be on a perch that might be too close to the side of the cage?
Maybe breaking off his tail that way?
Are any other feathers (besides the tail feathers) coming in oddly?
This has me stumped... Can you get a picture?

Leah, I'm assuming it's not new/blood feathers that he's partially breaking. As long as it's not a blood feather, you can clip a partially broken feather off at the point of the partial break when it's kind of just dangling like that.

I have read that some people will have their vets pluck out broken tail feathers, so they grow back in sooner, if the bird is losing balance from not having them.

Denise, his tail feathers aren't coming in yet & he doesn't really have a perch that is too close to the side of his cage. I use my brother's camera for pics & it's not working right now (lens won't open). However, I think there's a pic somewhere that might show it a little bit.
Calvin's Mom, when I'm outside & there's a breeze his tail feathers (the 1's that are broken) wave around.
FeathersNFur8, the breaking feathers are old 1's. The feathers aren't really dangling, they just stick out weird.
Thanks everyone.

I have seen this before with smaller birds as well as Harley. As long as it's not a blood feather, it should be ok. For Harley, on of her tail feathers was broken and hanging by part of the shaft. She wouldn't let me clip it or pull it, so I let it alone. After about a week, Harley plucked the feather out herself and a new one grew in.

He's already broken a couple of those dangling feathers off, but only to the break. He didn't pull it out from the "root".

Maybe a picture would help if you are able to find one. Is his feathering okay elsewhere?
