Default Winston had his first shower tonight!

And he really enjoyed it!

After I put Jerry and Lulu away for the night (well, Jerry put himself away - he was NUTS tonight and completely wore himself out!), I decided to try a misting with Winston. He has quite a few itchy pin feathers coming in on his head - I'm sure due to his new and MUCH better diet and better surroundings overall - and he was scratching his head on his gyms posts quite a bit this evening.

I first misted myself of course, to show him that it was ok At first he was unsure, but very curious nonetheless. Then I began gently misting him - squirting well above him and on a low setting - and he got pretty excited! He kept trying to catch the tiny droplets in his beak and he was clearly amused.

AND - he kept attempting to fly to me a few times during the process! He would fly near me and try to land on the squirt bottle, but it's way too thick for that. I tried to get him to land on my arm (we're still having difficulties with step up, but he's not afraid of me at all), and he was VERY tempted, but no luck. I'll try again tomorrow.

I think this is a big step in our bonding as well as his overall health! I soaked a good portion of the living room and myself quite a bit, but it was worth it! (and no, I didn't get pics, but he didn't get soaked or anything, I doubt it would even show in pics)

Good for Winston! I know what you mean about soaking the room. I expect someday I'll have water damage in the living room from doing it.

Well that's fun - Glad to hear Winston was so interested.

I say this - as i brace myself for tricking Laker to go into the bathroom for his morning shower. He lands on me, but only cause he thinks i won't spray myself!

I was surprised at how wet everything got because at the time it just seems like super fine mist and you don't realize how quickly it adds up! LOL

Yay for Winston!! Glad to hear he enjoyed getting wet! Did he preen a lot afterwards? I always love watching my birds preen after their showers/baths. Out of curiosity, do budgies prefer showers to baths? I know that some of my birds have distinct preferences for one over the other.

Winston did a preen a lot afterwards - but Jerry NEVER preens after showers, and he gets soaked. He prefers to air dry I guess

I've tried baths with Jerry and Winston as well, presenting them with shallow dishes of water and splashing around it in myself, or just leaving it in their cage for awhile, and nothing. Jerry and Lulu both shower in the big shower with us. Jerry kind of takes a bath in their, I cup my hands and fill them with water and he jumps in my hands and wiggles around to get wet - it's the cutest little dance! But he also likes the water that bounces off of me and onto him in the shower. I tried misting him and Lulu in the beginning and neither liked it. Lulu LOVES showers, she gets soaked as well. Jerry also likes to run under the running faucet in the sink.

Winston's feather color already looks brighter than when he first came home, I can't wait to see what he looks like once he molts out some old feathers and now with mistings he should be lookin' GOOD!
