Default A collection of recipes

Yup these have all been purloined , borrowed and altered or just down right flinched from other birdy recipes. In my quest to find food to make for my fids (and Lilly when she gets her red feathered butt here) I gathered up and printed these out into my birdy food folder (a good thing to have on hand if you constantly forget things like I do ). Some are very similar with just a few things changed, others you might have seen before (more then likely )

Oatmeal Balls
3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups Quaker oats
1/2 cup combined chopped holiday fruit and nuts and coconut mixture.....I make my own.
1/2 cup unsweetened natural applesauce
1/3 cup dark mollasses
1 teasp cinnamon
1/2 teasp cloves
1 teasp vanilla 1 egg.
Mix it all up like mad.....roll into balls....bake at 325 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes....or as long as it takes.
Pam the cookie sheet first.
Add more oats if needed.....another egg or more applesauce if wanted wetter.
You really want this fairly stiff.
Make to about the size of large Walnuts.
Just before serving, dust with Hagen's Prime Vitamins....they taste lovely and you may then feel entirely virtuous about cookies for your feathers. They have now become highly nutritious.

CINDY'S BIRDIE BREAD
2 cups Bisquick
2 cups yellow corn meal
1 cup whole wheat flour,
4eggs with shells (washed well and blended in a mixer to crush shells)
3 6 oz. jars of pureed fruit and vegetable baby food, any combination (I use 1-sweet potato 1-chicken vegetable 1-banana)
(Optional additions)
1/2 pkg. dried fruit (fruit bits)
chopped nuts (walnuts, almonds, peanuts, etc.)
shaved cuttle bone
shelled sunflower seeds
shelled millet
shelled pumpkin seeds
Preheat oven to 350
Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray
Mix all dry ingredients together, well.
Add eggs and Baby food Stir until all Ingredients. are evenly moist.
Batter will be very thick and heavy.
Bake approximately 40 minutes or until cake pulls away from the edges of the pan.
I check with a tooth pick to make sure the center is cooked.
Cool completely, cut into cubes, slices.
Reserve enough for 2-3- days and freeze the rest.
Thaw as needed.
*NOTE* I add a little water to moisten the batter. Once you start adding the nuts and stuff it tends to be dry. You don't want it too wet or too dry. I add the optional ingredients except I have added pellet. Our birds sometimes start flinging pellets, so I collect them and crush them and add them to the birdie bread. We are at sea level, so cooking times may vary. I would check it after 30 minutes. I have also tried this recipe with fresh fruit. It works but doesn't keep as well as the dried fruit. Some people make the base and add just beans. You can buy a frozen mix . Frozen veggies. will work too. Thaw the frozen ingredients before adding to the rest.

BEAN MIX
Red Beans,
Black-eyed Peas,
Great Northern,
Lima Beans,
Kidney Beans,
Pinto Beans
Soybeans equal to the total amount of mixed beans.
Soak for 24 hours, bring to a boil with a little salt and let sit for a couple of hours. Drain and rinse. This bread is the only thing I can get my Cockatoos to eat other than oranges and uncooked spaghetti.

BIRDIE TREAT

Boil some wild rice
Boil some beans (white, kidney, u name it).
Bake a yam.
Cook some polenta.
Steam some broccoli.
Mush it all together into meal-size balls and freeze.
It only takes about 45 min to defrost, surprisingly, and Screech likes it cool to room temp.
These can also be rolled in pellet dust (left over pellets, I always have a heap left in the bottom of my pellet barrel - always check that they are still fresh though/ or you can just grin the pellets up and coat the balls up in them)

Fruit and Nut Bar
2 Large eggs
1/4 cup walnuts
1/4 cup raisins
18 oz Box corn bread
1/3 cup cranberry juice
1/4 cup applesauce
1/2 cup mixed vegetables, defrosted, and chopped fine
1/2 cup chopped broccoli
1. Preheat oven to 400*
2. In a large bowl, stir together, eggs, applesauce, cranberry juice, mixed vegetables and broccoli.
3. Add corn bread mix a little at a time. Stir until well combined.
4. Stir in raisins and walnuts.
5. Pour batter into well greased 8x8" pan.
6. Bake for 20 minutes.
7. When cool, cut into squares and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator
Also freezes very well

Nutty Veggie Bread
2 boxes corn muffin mix
3 tablespoons baking powder
2 eggs and shells, puree in food processor
4 jars strained baby peas
3/4 cup peanut butter
2 cups baby rice cereal
1 1/2 cups shredded carrots
1. Preheat oven to 400*
2. In a large bowl, combine corn muffin mix, baking powder and rice cereal.
3. Add strained peas and pureed egg with shells. Mix well.
4. Stir in peanut butter with a wooden spoon. Batter will be very stiff.
5. Stir in shredded carrots.
6. Pat mixture into a well greased 9 x 13" pan.
7. Bake for 30 minutes.
8. Cool on rack, cut into squares and store in freezer. Defrost and serve.

Oatmeal Raisin Truffles
1 Large sweet potato, baked until soft
1/2 cup raisins
1 banana
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup diced peaches
1 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1. In food processor, puree sweet potato, banana, peaches and carrots until smooth.
2. When smooth, add quick cooking oats and puree until smooth again.
3. Stir in raisins with wooden spoon.
4. Roll into small balls and freeze. They will keep for about 6 months in the freezer.

Homemade Avicakes
I mix even amounts like:
2 cups crushed cereal..... (Cheerios or Shredded Wheat..)
2 cups crushed pellets or instant oatmeal cereal (I don't like pellets but lots of people feed them)
2 cups assorted seeds

Add about 1 and a quarter cups of Honey
Stir untill mixture is wet but not dripping
You may need to adjust the honey. you can also use corn syrup if you don't like the honey
Pour it onto a cookie sheet and spread it out
Bake at very low.... like 200 - 225 for about 45 minutes
Half way through cooking I usually score them it makes it easier to cut them when done
You can also shape these around craft sticks with a hole drilled at one end for a hanging treat in the cage
These make terrific stocking stuffers or birthday gifts for the birds

Orange Nut Bread

1 cup of mashed sweet potatoes
1-12 oz. can of frozen concentrate orange juice with calcium
3 1/2 cups of corn flour
3/4 cup of chopped nuts

Mix all ingredients together.
Place in greased 13X9 cake pan.
Cook for 35-40 minutes at 350 degrees.
Sometimes I add raisins and/or some Petamine
I serve in 1 inch squares, and it does freeze well if need

Lol these taste so good that I eat them myself

Bean, Rice and Veggie Mix

2/3 cup mixed dried beans (the kind sold for bean soup)
1/4 cup birdseed
1/4 cup cracked corn
1 very large acorn or butternut squash (about 3 cups cubed)- I also add 1 large sweet potato for the vitamin A content
1 small apple
2/3 cup cooked pasta
2-3 large leaves collard greens
1/8 cup almonds
1/8 cup alfalfa pellets
1/3 cup grapes, peaches, or other fruit
1 or 2 tbss chili powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 packed cup cooked rice
1 package frozen green peas
fruit juice

Soak the beans, cracked corn, and seed in a bowl of water overnight. Then boil the beans, seed, and corn for 20 minutes or so, until cooked. If you're using the microwave, make sure to use plenty of water. They absorb a lot while cooking.

Remove the core and seeds of the apple and cut into a few pieces. Cut the squash/and sweet potato into cubes. Squash seeds do not need to be removed, they are very nutritious. Boil the apple and squash/sweet potato for 10 to 15 minutes or until very soft and mushy. The squash/sweet potato skins can be pulled off and discarded.

Combine beans, corn, seeds, squash/sweet potato pulp and seeds, apple, pasta, collard greens, almonds, alfalfa pellets, fruit, chili powder, cinnamon, and cheese in a food processor. This may overfill the food processor and might need to be done half at a time. Process until ingredients are well-mixed and chopped up a little.

Stir in cooked rice and thawed peas. Add fruit juice to achieve a nice consistancy.I freeze in ziplock sandwich bags, and defrost them by standing them in boiled water. Doesn't take very long to warm through and gives me enough time to count how many bags I have left in the freezer!

Corn Bread Squares

1 Cup plain yellow corn meal
1 teaspoon backing powder
1 egg
1/2 cup apple sauce
1/2 cup apple juice (pasturized)
1/3 cup thawed frozen peas
1/3 cup grated carrot
1/3 cup cooked white or brown rice
1/3 cup pellets or seeds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, mix above ingredients together. Put in a glass 8x8 pan. Bake for 35 minutes. Allow corn bread to cool and cut into 1 inch squares.

Homemade Parrot Muffins
2 cups corn meal flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
3 eggs with shell (blend in blender or food processor)
2 4 oz jars sweet potato baby food
1 whole banana, mashed
1/2 cup red kidney beans (either soaked and cooked, or canned)
2 cups strained vegetable baby food (4 4oz jars)
4 Tbsp peanut butter
1/2 cup chopped mixed nuts
1/2 cup shredded coconut, unsweetened (optional)
2 4oz jars of diced apple baby food
Mix and put into small muffin pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45
minutes.
Can be frozen too, I put them in the fridge for the night to defrost then microwave for a few seconds. Just make sure to check them before giving them to your fids cause they can get hot spots.

Fruit Heavenly Rice Pudding

Add all contents to a quart of cold water. Bring water to a boil, then lower the heat. Cover and simmer 30 minutes. Serve warm (not hot). Can also be served cool. Silk really likes this cool, as opposed to warm. Yields 2 pounds or 1 1/2 quarts

Bean/grain/pasta mix
2 cups unpopped popcorn
½ cup red beans
½ cup white beans
½ cup garbonzos
½ cup dried peas
½ cup brown rice (or any rice other than white)
OR ½ cup pearl barley
OR ½ cup mixed rice and barley
½ cup pasta of your bird's choice
1 cup diced fresh carrot
Soak popcorn two days(I only soak them for one full day and cook them for extra,if you soak them for two days I have found that you have to change the water they are soaking in) and beans and peas for one day, changing the soak water every eight hours.Cook popcorn for one hour in LOTS of water in a BIG covered pot, bring to boil then simmer.Add beans and peas, cook for 15 minutes.Add rice/barley, cook for ten minutes. Add pasta and carrots, cook five minutes.Drain, cool, bag and freeze. Serves hundreds.Everything stays sort of semi-hard. I found that they don't like it if it turns out too mushy, (like canned beans). Sometimes I dress it up with other veggies, add peppers to the pot or change the pasta types. And each bird has favorites in the mix, but generally they all eat most of it.

Boiled Popcorn Kernels- my guys LOVE these
Method #1 - I haven't used this method so if you do, let me know how it goes
Place a pound of popcorn kernels in a LARGE microwave proof bowl.
Fill the bowl with water.
Cook on high for 1 ½ hours and add more water each half hour.
Drain, cool and pack in small bags and freeze.
Defrost in hot water and feed.

Method #2
Place popcorn kernels in slow cooker. Don't use a non-stick cooker.
Fill slow cooker with water.
Cook on low for about 10 hours.
Drain and cool.
Method #3- this is how I cook them
Soak kernals overnight
drain/add water till there is about 3 cm of water covering
bring to boil then turn down heat and simmer for about 2 hours. They are cooked when they are plumped and soft on the inside. You will need to keep an eye on them, stirring occasionally and maybe adding water (because they swell up and absorb water during cooking)
These are great to add to fresh veggies, or too freeze and add while making other recipes. Or you can give them straight (cooled) to your fids

Beans And Rice

1/4 cup pinto beans
1/4 cup kidney beans
1/4 cup split peas
1/4 cup lentils
1/4 cup navy beans
1/4 cup garbanzo beans
1 cup cooked brown rice
1 cup cooked white rice
1 carrot (chopped)
1 cup frozen corn (thawed)
Soak beans overnight. Drain, rinse, refill pan with water. Add carrots and cook with beans for 1 hour. Add corn and rice and cook till warm. Cool and serve. Store excess in leak proof containers. May be frozen in 3 day serving sized containers and thawed before use.

Birdie Lunch

1 part small red beans
1 part hulled millet
1 part lentils
1 part brown rice
1 part chopped walnuts
Cook the beans, millet, lentils, and rice and mix together with walnuts. Add any other additions you think of such as egg, carrots, etc. Freeze and thaw in microwave.

Brown Rice and Veggies

Cook 1 cup brown rice according to package directions. Allow to cool and add 1 pound mixed veggies. Toss and freeze in plastic bags.
I double the recipe and use 1 pound regular mixed vegetables (peas, green beans, corn, limas, carrots) and 1 pound of stir-fry vegetables (asparagus, brocolli, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, bell pepper - the greater the variety, the better). I have small birds as well as large birds, so I use a heavy knife and chopping board and break the frozen veggie pieces into smaller ones before I mix them in.
Brown rice is eaten by the pickiest of birds, and if you have trouble getting veggies into your bird, you can process the frozen vegetables almost to a puree and mix with the rice. If they like the rice, they generally will not turn it down because of the vegetable flavor, you can also cook the rice in different juices - apple, carrot, pomegranate (just look for the ones with no added sugar) to make a different taste

Chela's Rice Ball Surprise

Boil 2 cups of white rice until it is sticky. Wait about half an hour for it to cool enough to handle. Fill a metal bowl with cold water and set off to the side.
Chop about 20-30 bite sized pieces of your bird's favorite veggie treat. Once the rice is cool enough to handle, take a small amount and flatten it in your palm, place veggie treat in center, cover with more sticky rice. Wet hands with cold water and roll into small, talon-sized balls, just big enough for your bird to hold. Repeat until rice is gone. Makes between 20 and 30 balls, depending on size. These can be frozen and re-heated in the microwave as desired.

Complete Eclectus Soft Food Mix (this goes down a real treat with my ringies)

* 1/2 cup beans (Mix red beans, pinto, kidney, garbanzo and others. Eclectus parrots favor garbanzo beans for some reason.)
* 1/4 cup corn
* 1/4 cup Yellow popcorn
- 1/4 cup of brown rice
- 1/4 cup of white rice
- 1 sweet potato
- 1/2 cup of raisins, cranberries, etc.
- 1/2 cup of carrots, chard, etc.
- 1/4 cup of seeds
- 1/4 cup of oatmeal
Soak the starred items overnight in 2 cups water. In the morning boil the beans, then turn the heat low and wait until they are so soft that you can mash them in your hands. Make sure the beans have water at all times until they are almost ready. Boil the brown rice in 3/4 cup of water, adding water as needed. Cover the rice on low heat as soon as the rice starts boiling. Turn off heat as soon as it's puffy and soft. Do the same with the white rice, but only add 1/2 cup at first. As you cook both of the rices, drop in some mashed up, fresh, sweet potatoes and stir occassionally. During cooking also add the oatmeal and the rest of the ingredients. Turn off heat and mix all the ingredients. Your eclectus or other bird should love this mix

Somba's Supreme Rice Dish

2 cups brown minute rice (pre-cooked)
2 cups thawed frozen peas & carrots
2 eggs scrambled
1/2 cup celery chopped
1 1/2 cups of chopped leeks
1 cup chick peas (garbanzos)
1/2 cup pinneapple chunks
3 tbs red palm oil - can't find this here, over in the States has it though
We precook all ingredients and then blend together. Garbanzo beans must be soaked over night, and then cooked until firm yet tender. Add spices of your choice. We chose cinnamon.

Basic Rice Recipe
2 c. cooked rice
4 c. cooked mixed veggies
1 c. high protein baby cereal
1 T. Vitapreen or other good bird vitamin

Mix well. Freeze in small freezer bags. Break off pieces as needed, heat, and serve. Other items you can add are cooked macaroni, beans, raisins, or chopped figs

Rice and Pellet Mixture

2 cups cooked brown rice
1 cup soaked pellets
1 1/2 cups mixed veggies
handful of walnuts
1 apple, cored

I put the apple, veggies and walnuts through the food processor until finely chopped, then mix with the rest. Stuff the mix into ice cube trays and freeze, then put the cubes into zip-lock bags. When I want to use a cube, nuke it for 30 seconds

Beans and Rice

1 1/2 cups mixed beans
1/2 cup split peas
1/2 cup brown rice
1/2 cup cracked corn
1/2 cup dried peppers

Soak beans overnight in water, drain and rinse. Cover with water again, turn on heat and boil for 2 minutes. Let stand and cool for 1 hour. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring frequently, until water is absorbed, or about 1 hour. Cool and keep refrigerated or freeze in baggies.

Quinoa Breakfast of Champions"
1 cup quinoa
2-3 cups water
Corn kernels
Chopped carrots
Raisins and/or dried apples (unsulphured, found in health food stores)
Cinnamon stick
Boil 2 cups of water, add quinoa. Cook for 10 minutes, then add veggies and dried fruit. Cook another 5 minutes or until the quinoa grain is clearish and has a tiny tail sprouting from it. You may have to add a little more water if it gets too dry too quickly. Let cool. Serve. You can put almost any veggies or fruits in this recipe
I add to this recipe with the frozen Sara Lee wildberry mix. They really like the fruits in it and it is never turned away (well so far anyways ). I also cook the Quinoa in carrot juice for an extra boost of betacarotene.

Thanks guys, Lilly really loves the sweet potato puffs with a small amount of shredded coconut and rolled in oats served warm. I am trying to think of more ways to get her eating leafy greens and veggies cause at the moment she is turning her little beak up at them.
