Default Sally - tell me about Chipper!

Sally - I was wondering if you would tell how you got Chipper and what your first days and weeks were like with her. What you did to bond with her etc.. Would you mind?

I just saw on another thread you said it was easy to tell the sex of Pacific parrotlets - so how do you tell? I'm pretty sure that's what the parrotlet at the pet store is.

I'm not Sally, but the way you tell whether it is a male or female is - #1 the eyestripe. In the males it is bigger, a deeper blue color & longer. #2 is their back. In males it is DEEP cobalt blue, i'm not too sure about females.
those are the 2 things i know for sure.

Hi! In Pacific Greens, there is blue on the wings of the males. Girls do not have this. Girls have lots of pretty color though. The eyes are gorgeous and so is the rump area. Turquois and blue. Like a hummingbird. Irridencent.

Let's see. When we bought Chipper, she was a darling sweetie and she came to be close to me when I talked. Hubby wanted a parrot and I thought they would be too loud. Most are too loud for me. I have Chronic Fatigue and often do not feel well. I have to have a quiet home too.

SO, we both fell in love with her! They man had a bit of trouble getting her so I asked if I could. I caught her.

We came home and she was pretty wild for a while. I took her out each day, talking and singing quietly. I taught her to turn around, quack on cue and to touch various toys when I ask. Week by week, we bonded. I learned on the boards not to rush the bonding and all went well.

As the months went by, she really became our best little cuddly girl! She is now very bonded and close to my hubby and I. We have had her for one year and a month.

We tell her what will come next. Scritches, night night, naptime etc. She likes that very much. Parrotlets can get excited and we try to keep her nice and calm and she is happy with that.

She gets at least 12 hours of sleep each night and she loves her naptime. When I go nap, I close the window coverings and she sleeps. She is just a little doll! I can't WAIT to see her each morning. We love buying toys and a few months ago, we bought her mansion. They need very large cages.

She is a great little eater. Loves her veggie mash, nutriberries, millet, birdie breads that I add lots of veggies and fruit to.

Thank you for asking. Did I answer your questions? I am so happy there is a parrot that is just right for me.

Adorable picture! Thanks Sally! Did you see my post - I brought him home! (Denise said she thinks it's a boy!) I'm sure I'll have more ?'s for you as the days go by. I'm kind of giving him his space tonight so he can get used to his new cage and surroundings.

Sally, That is such a cute picture!. Love the bunny ears. I think that picture should be submitted in a photo contest.

Hi Sally - thought I'd give you an update on how things are going today with my little guy. Still haven't decided on a name - my daughter wants to call him Ziggy. I kind of like it - but just not sure yet. Anyway - I think things are going great! Even though he was at the pet store for several months - I think someone there interacted with him a lot. I put his cage on my bed a little while ago and got him to eat seed from my fingers. I kind of lured him out of the cage with it. I sang to him and talked to him and we played the blinking game. He came down on his own and nibbled on my shirt and hand. Then he crawled onto my finger. Boy can they pack a powerful pinch with that little beak! LOL He acted like he wanted to climb up my shirt - but I certainly don't trust him to be on my shoulder or that close to my face yet. At one point he climbed back onto his cage and went on top of it. I layed down on beside his cage and talked to him. He came down some and leaned way over towards me. I held up my finger and talked him some more and he actually flew to my hand! I was so excited! He stayed there for awhile and we talked and sang some more and he started closing his eyes. He finally went back to the top of his cage. I decided I better get up and get dressed - we have some errands to run today. I was trying to get him to step up - but he wasn't too sure about it. I gently moved 1 hand behind him and the other hand up to him and kind of scooted him onto my finger till he stepped on. I told him what a good boy he was and put him back in his cage. While we're out today I'm going to stop by 1 or 2 of the pet stores and get some millet. We're all out of it and I thought it might be good to help with training.
