Default Food question?

Are canned beets & lima beans, green & red seedless grapes, sugar free applesauce & canned yams in light syrup (which I will rinse off to get syrup off) OK for birds?

I went to the market today and sort of went nuts buying stuff for the bird. He had grapes for the first time & loved them, also he had rasberries & blueberries for the first time, and they were a hit also.

thanx!

Gayla, it's winter there so you don't have much choice for fruit! I should think it would be fine as long as you rinse off the syrup or buy canned fruit packed in water. Frozen fruit can be nice too. You may end up creating a new mutation with the blueberries though! LOL

I use frozen Lima beans and cook them well. Canned sometimes has alot of salt.
Grapes dont have much nutritional value. Tho they do seem to be a big hit.
I stopped giving them with the big grape scare over the summer.

I have used some stuff in a light syrup, and just rinsed it off,,,,I have not had any problems with doing so.

My guys wont eat blueberries no matter how hard I tried. I even put them in with their eggs one morning, and wow....it looked gross. They wouldnt even eat the egg!

Mine like dried cranberries. they are a hit, and good for them as well.

Well, we have rasberries & blueberries & strawberry's....I buy them in the little boxes, and grapes, and freeze them. I've tried banana, he doesn't seem to like them....he loves oranges, and just recently started to like blueberries & rasberries.....makes for colorfull poop...lol I had to stop giving him Pomogranats (sp?), because that crap stains...LOL

What was the deal with the grapes? Should I not give him any?

I buy canned veggies because if I don't it ends up going bad on me. I always buy low salt, and rinse it really good. He's crazy for corn as well...I can give him a huge bowl of assorted fruit & veggies, and he'll pick out all the corn first.

Are beets OK?

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the grapes came from Chile. Does that sound right?

I have read before that fruit really doesn't have much nutritional value and the top two that do are papaya and mangos. I believe that was in Bird Talk about 2 years ago. And from what I've heard around the clinic, they really stear clear of a lot of fruits due to them being high in sugar which too much leads to yeast infections. That's hard for me because Murray loves grapes and Rico loves bananas. I've been given the lifted eyebrow many times for feeding Rico the bananas, but once in a while it's ok as a treat, but then I have to eat the rest of them.
Me personally, I stear clear of anything in a can, yes because of the high sodium too, but also because of the preservatives. I like to buy a lot of my stuff fresh from the market and whatever happens to be in season. My theory on this is that, the change of fruits and veggies with the change of the season somewhat replicates their change in their natural habitat. Does that make sense, or just make me look like I'm thinking about things too much.
I do like to sneak the blueberries in as treats too though. Aren't they supposed to be high in antioxidants?

Due to the recent grape scare, and out of an abundance of caution, when I do give my birds any, I only give them domestically grown ones. My birds go nuts for grapes but I use them sparingly.

One fruit that all my birds seem to love and are in abundant supply year round is apples. I always thoroughly wash and core the apple so the birds don't ingest the apple seeds. My amazon will even ask verbally, saying "want apple"!!

My birds love cantaloupe, and I believe that it is pretty healthy for them to eat, as well as mangoes. Mine love blueberries (and yes, Lara, I agree -- high in antioxidants) but only if firm -- no mushy fruit for my spoiled brats. And they all adore pomegrantes -- but boy, does that stuff stain!!

Frankly, I lean towards giving more veggies than fruits -- I view the fruits more like treats.

Oh, and yes, bananas are also a big hit with all my guys except my most finicky eater -- Izzy, my U2. I swear, she is my biggest challenge to get fresh foods into -- fussy, fussy, fussy.

I agree with you Lara. I let the seasons dictate what they are receiving as I feed mostly fresh veggies and fruit. My guys are not big fans of mushy veggies so frozen does not go over well here. They enjoy crisp and crunchy. lol They do get some dehydrated fruit occasion and cranberries seem to be the fav. Right now everyone is enjoying pomegranite juice mixed in their cooked mix. Gives it a slightly sweet taste with a boat load of antioxidants! (Shhhhh.... I eat it too!)

Oooh, what an excellent idea!! I'll have to try that, Deb! That's got to be a far "neater" way of getting the anti-oxident benefits of pomegrantes into them than the way I've been doing it! Thanks for sharing that tip!!
