#2 | | | Gayla, it's winter there so you don't have much choice for fruit! I should think it would be fine as long as you rinse off the syrup or buy canned fruit packed in water. Frozen fruit can be nice too. You may end up creating a new mutation with the blueberries though! LOL

#7 | | | If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the grapes came from Chile. Does that sound right?
I have read before that fruit really doesn't have much nutritional value and the top two that do are papaya and mangos. I believe that was in Bird Talk about 2 years ago. And from what I've heard around the clinic, they really stear clear of a lot of fruits due to them being high in sugar which too much leads to yeast infections. That's hard for me because Murray loves grapes and Rico loves bananas. I've been given the lifted eyebrow many times for feeding Rico the bananas, but once in a while it's ok as a treat, but then I have to eat the rest of them.
Me personally, I stear clear of anything in a can, yes because of the high sodium too, but also because of the preservatives. I like to buy a lot of my stuff fresh from the market and whatever happens to be in season. My theory on this is that, the change of fruits and veggies with the change of the season somewhat replicates their change in their natural habitat. Does that make sense, or just make me look like I'm thinking about things too much.
I do like to sneak the blueberries in as treats too though. Aren't they supposed to be high in antioxidants? |

#8 | | | Due to the recent grape scare, and out of an abundance of caution, when I do give my birds any, I only give them domestically grown ones. My birds go nuts for grapes but I use them sparingly.
One fruit that all my birds seem to love and are in abundant supply year round is apples. I always thoroughly wash and core the apple so the birds don't ingest the apple seeds. My amazon will even ask verbally, saying "want apple"!!
My birds love cantaloupe, and I believe that it is pretty healthy for them to eat, as well as mangoes. Mine love blueberries (and yes, Lara, I agree -- high in antioxidants) but only if firm -- no mushy fruit for my spoiled brats. And they all adore pomegrantes -- but boy, does that stuff stain!!
Frankly, I lean towards giving more veggies than fruits -- I view the fruits more like treats.
Oh, and yes, bananas are also a big hit with all my guys except my most finicky eater -- Izzy, my U2. I swear, she is my biggest challenge to get fresh foods into -- fussy, fussy, fussy. |

That's got to be a far "neater" way of getting the anti-oxident benefits of pomegrantes into them than the way I've been doing it! Thanks for sharing that tip!! |
