Default OK Budgie experts...

Since I worked at Petco, I always loved the budgies. I know that 1 will need more attention from you, but 2 will keep each other company, and not need so much personal attention from me. Not that they wouldn't get it.

Pita is pretty independant, and comes to me when he wants to, other wise he's good at entertaining himself. He doesn't need to be with me every minute...as long as he can see me, he's happy.

So, any suggestions if I were to , lets say, get a couple of Budgies?

Cage size etc etc....would I be better off with 2 males, or 2 females...I don't want baby budgies...lol

2 males for sure. Females are agressive towards other females. Every night I have to change perching choice positions to keep the pets happy if the females try for the same perch close together. Peewee makes holes in the other females at night. They are never caged maybe this is why. In an aviary situation you always need pairs or extra males, extra females is a bad idea. I dont see much difference in tameness although the females are a lot more opinionated when they dont think they should step up. Peewee is female and the tamest of the lot, she is the only one to go/come looking for my daughter.

Well, I'd go for males, I'm not experienced enough for the egg laying.

Do you think Pita would be OK? I mean would he be pissed, and have a personality change?

Pita may be a little ticked off at first. He is afterall an only bird. They will never be able to be in the same cage, as Pita weighs more than 4 budgies. I can have suns and budgies on me at the same time now but on different shoulders and it did take some training. The budgie wants to preen the suns and the suns dont approve of this anymore. They do sometimes try push the budgies off (they push each other off too), not by beak, just simply pushing with the body. So far there has never been an act of agression from sun to budgie although the budgie has intimdated the sun to run to mommy for help. Budgies are not cuddly like suns, they are much more independant with strong flock instincts.

Gayla, if you want Pita to be able to play with the new bird, I would get one in the same size like another type of conure or a quaker. When you mix birds of different sizes, the larger bird can either accidentally or purposely hurt the smaller bird.

I would say two males also. And if you want them to both be tame and interact with you, it would most likely take spending time with each of them individually on a constant basis.

I'm not sure how Pita would react. We got Lulu after Jerry and she's still pissed that the budgie is around

Definitely 2 males. I have two males and they're so entertaining. They both love coming out to play, but have eachother when I'm not around. Can't help you with Pita, I'll be facing the same thing in a few weeks when I bring home my GCC.

interesting....

i'm sure pita would be pissed at the beginning... i'm not sure, valo picked up on it yet, that he has to share daddy with that "orange monster" (which btw is doing fabulous and is absolutely gorgeous - and so spoiled, nobody would believe what i saw tonight.... BF and bella in neverending snuggle-sessions... there might not be any left for me )... so getting another equal size bird could be great since they could play, but also more of an issue with jealousy... IMO...

i think 2 male budgies would do great... and they would get plenty of attention from you ....

I have two female budgies. Coco has to be quarantined for 9 more days then I will put her with Pearl, so I can't tell you how they get along yet!

Good luck with whatever you choose. I've heard males are the best choice in budgies and are less aggressive than females. It just takes patience no matter if you choose males or females.

I'll be interested to see how Coco and Pearl get along! I currently have a male in quarantine until he's a bit more tame (his test results have come back and he's healthy, but we want him to trust us a bit more), and I'm very anxious to see how he gets along with my other male. And Winston (the new budgie) is an English budgie whereas Jerry is not.
