Default Mixing the sexes.... my lesson learned

I realize that some people are able to successfully have more both sexes in their homes as far as birds are concerned but I have done it and will never do it again. Jodi can attest to the level of intensity and the disgust that one bird inevitably had for me out of jealousy.

I have had Echo for five years now..... I really enjoy the militaries as they are a stubborn pain in the butt species that I enjoy trying to decode the puzzle. So I thought that I would get another one......

I ended up getting the bird before a new cage and kept Asia in my room on a playstand for her quarantine while she and I bonded closely as I did with my other birds. Well didnt see the problem with putting her and Echo together as long as I made sure to still spend quality time with both of them.

Needless to say they bonded very well and quickly! If I came near the cage she went into a primal rage that had she gotten the chance to get ahold of me I have no doubt that she would have gouged my eyes out ( Jodi saw that anger ) but she will still just as nice as could be with anyone else. I was her enemy because her man ( Echo ) loved her but still loved me too. He bobbed for both of us... preened both of us.... called for both of us... but she didnt want to share.

Long story short I had to rehome Asia and although I regret the home ( thats another story in itself ) I dont regret the decision to rehome. From the moment she saw me as a threat for her man she was never going to see me another way. No amount of seperation or treats or anything was going to change that between her and I.

sooooooo..... me? Nope not ever again will I put opposite genders in the same house let alone the same cage or even next to each other. Nope not this house not this girl not ever again.

I feel for you here. While it wasn't an issue of sexes we did bring Merlin's brother home because other people weren't having luck with him. He and Merlin bonded right away and we pretty much lost our little buddy. We brought Chaco (Merlin's brother) right back to the aviary and although it was painful Merlin came back to us. Chaco hung out for a year and a half until a good home took him.

Now we have Ariel and Merlin and although they are different sexes I doubt that Ariel would be interested in Merlin, he's just to short for her.

Do you feel that's where the problem begins...if they're caged together? I have a male and female GW. They don't appear to even like each other and both are bonded to me. I have visions that someday they may like to hang out together to play, but I wouldn't want to start something that would one day turn into them hating me.

Lets see..... This wass three years ago I think maybe four at the most. So I think he was two or three and she was a year or so older......

He never developed any issues with me or anyone else for that matter. He had been bounced around so many times in just a few short years that he was just thankful I think to have a long term home.

He knew better than to bite the hand that fed him LOL

She was where all the issues came in.

I would never have a female in the house again. Never!

If someone does I wouldnt have their cages very close, definetly not caged together and I would avoid play time together as well. IMO once it starts there is no way to back out of it. Once that bond between them is there, you cant take it back.

I am sure that folks have caws or even other birds caged together or next to each other or out at play time together with no incident...... but why tempt fate? If you want to keep your companion parrot as a loving pet... its not worth the risk.

She was the most dangerous bird I have ever seen when trying to keep me away from him.

but as I said this is all just IMO

Every bird has different personalities. Asia..the female mili Heather is talking about wasn't a super friendly/lovey bird to start. She was hitting breeding age, and decided once she was with another military she wanted him and no one else. Echo the male likes people and other birds...especially females, so he would preen her and was friendly to her, so they bonded. He was still a pet and was fine, but she wanted to kill Heather. I saw it first hand. I was able to catch her and towel her to do wings and nails, and she stepped up even. With the right home (with no boys) she could have been turned around. We sort of went through the same thing with Kyla. She freaked when we moved, so she went to stay with "Auntie Tammy LOL" she was Ok at first but bonded hard to Tammy's GW. She became agressive toward noty only Tammy and David, but to the other birds if they got near her man. Kyla is about 7 years old. It seems that the new bird that hasn't had time to bond well with the human companion are the ones that get out of hand. I think that birds that are owned for awhile and have a good human bond ,then warm up to each other have a better chance of having the best of both worlds, human and bird friends.
