Hi,
I got a call from the neighbors last Saturday night. They had a Senegal dove nesting on the windowsill; one baby was dead and the other in distress. The mother dove had thrown the live baby out of the nest; so I took it home.
Warming it in a towel soon disclosed the problem and why the mother had thrown it out and probably why the other was dead. It had about 8 worms sucking its blood. The worms were what I suppose were earwig larvae, which are supposed to be lethal in a bird nest.
The worms were easily disposed of down the drain (they were full of blood - ugh). I took the baby and put a drop of Ivermectin on the back of its neck in case there were any more surprises. The baby had been fed by the mother; so I warmed it and put it away for the night.
The next day it looked good as new and responded to hand feeding. It is cute.
