Default Threatened PSITTACINE (Cockatoo's) in Australia.

The most paramount threat to Australian Cockatoo's is PBFD.

The disease affects parrots, cockatoos, any hook bill bird or scientific name PSITTACINE species.

Black Cockatoo's, Sulpha Cockatoo's, Parrots, Lorriekeets.

Imagine our country without the Rainbow Lorrie, the Black Cockatoo.....

CHECK OUT Manau PBFD educate yourselves and help towards the problem.
Forum to help those with PBFD birds. (link didn't work. I will post it as soon as I get home and on my own computer)

The search for a vaccine is in the hands of scientists.
We can all help by educating Psittacine bird owners. The general public.
Make them aware of the disease and what it is doing to our wildlife.

It is not only Australia that has threatened species from the disease it is South Africa as well. It won't be long before it reaches endemic stages in other countries as well.

Did you all know the virus has mutations?
Affecting Canaries, Crows and yup Chickens. There is more but I can't remember the species off the top of my head right now.

Importing/exporting birds needs to be done under strict quarantine. If anyone overseas has an Aussie bird, find out exactly where it came from, if you are thinking of purchasing one, make sure it's parentage is PBFD clear.

Lots of PBFD birds can show no symptoms but be carriers of the disease.

I recently read an article from Bio Diversity.

It stated that a few years back some well meaning wildlife carers took in sick looking Lorrikeets. Nursed them back to health then set them free.
Wildlife carers would do that, naturally, unbeknownst to them, these sick birds actually had PBFD. They had helped them over come the disease. Unfortunately they were carriers. The disesease remains in the liver for years after recovery.

I will see if I can find that article again and post it here.
