For starters I don't think that all parrot species can be grouped into one similar food pyramid. I think that dietary needs among the species can differ quite a bit.

I'd say that the fresh food percentage is way too low in that pyramid. And I wouldn't put the cooked grains as the highest percentage either (seems odd to me). And of course the seed vs. pellet ratio can vary widely as to who you ask (for my guys at least I believe in a greater seed portion vs. pellets).

The grain portion of this pyramid is what raised my eyebrows the highest! I know we talk about what they would eat in the wild, which we can never replicate, but at least we do try to stay within the food groups they are used too. But that said, I don't see where the birds would ever get all these cooked grains in their diet. I admit to not knowing what the proper percentage may be, but 60% grains, my instinct is saying NO!

I think if it said 60% vegetables and greens and fill in the rest with the other items I wouldn't have thought twice about it

The grains if it includes the more expensive beans, rices pasta etc and also if the trace elements normally found in pellets is included in the 60% it is ok, something like the kitchen sink recipe or a real parrot mix. 10% of fresh by volume is way too little. As Jac has said this wont suit all species as budgies for instance have a high seed requirement, but other parrots do not. Nuts which is something macaws definitely require is not mentioned and I am not thinking peanut here, I am thinking tree nuts.
My eyebrows is very raised when soybeans are mentioned, soy can be a very dangerous substance and should only be in tiny amounts or not at all, certainly not worth the mention in the sentence.

I'm flattered that you called Sarah, Jac! But as usual I agree with Sarah about most things.

There was this wonderful site that Karen or Camille posted a while back - HolisticBirds.com or specifically HolisticBird and HolisticBirds . It had tons of 'pyramids' - but I don't remember them calling for 60% cooked grains. & I also agree that Soya is way overvalued as it has health issues.

Thank you for posting this again Jac; Food Pyramid for Parrots

I really enjoyed going over it again and am going to keep it within arms reach to check diet. I liked the Pyramid for Macaws and felt the other specialized pyramids were good also.

I disagree with this pyramid. I understand that the wild parrot's diet can never be replicated, but 60% grains? That's a lot of carbs! I would say that the 60% needs to be fresh fruits and veggies, divided up into 60/40 or 70/30 ratios. My guys get about 80%-85% fresh fruits and veggies with 10%-12% cooked foods (including the grains) and then 3%-5% seeds, nuts, etc (this varies from bird to bird as well, this is just a rough estimate). IDK, the parrot food industry seems to group diets according the size, which is really sad...
