Yes....ANOTHER Macaw.

I got a call from the woman who runs the parrot rescue which I used to help at. All local rescues are full and there is a B&G in need of "fosering", most likely "permanent fostering". Its owner had brain surgery and recovered half paralyzed. He is going to try therapy, but will most likely not regain use of the paralyzed half of his body He says he wants someone to "board" his 20+ year old B&G...his female care-taker (possibly wife) says it would most likely be permanent, though. They say the B&G is quite tame and talks well. Since all of our local rescue are full (evidentially people can not afford adoption fees & cage prices with the way the economy is going, I'm told), I'm getting calls for birds in need of homes since everyone knows we just moved into a house. lol

Well I can not take in every homeless birdie, but I feel a calmness about taking in this needy B&G. I have a spare cage. I have many spare toys & perches. Already have the food and the room...so he's being dropped off at my house tonight.

I'm kind of nervous about it...I've never taken in a large rehomed bird, but I feel like it is the right thing to do. At least for now. I may decide, once I get the word that he'll definitely be getting rehomed for good, to rehome him, or I may decide to keep him. Time will tell. This is a far off question, but would any one in Florida possibly consider (JUST CONSIDER for now) adopting an older B&G?

I'll take photos tonight or tomorrow and post them as soon as possible, so I may introduce him to the PC family. Comcast is still taking their sweet time getting out to our area to put up a post and hook up our internet and cable television, so I can only log online during work hours, that's why I've been a stranger lately :x

I wouldn't mind hearing words of wisdom, or whatever. I've worked with rehomed Macaws and other larger birds in the rescue, shops, etc...but never in my own home. This is a big surprise. I have no idea how he'll act or how he'll take on to our home and our own flock.

Missi I would suggest you follow strict quarantine. This will serve two purposes; time to detect any disease or infection and time to let all the flock members get used to each other by listening first. Each will know the other is present.

Let the bird tell you how fast to proceed. IMO it takes time to build a foundation of trust. Take it slow and calm. Be confident, read body language and the bird will tell you the rest.

Missi thank you for taking this guy in. Whether he stays permanently or you find a forever home for him he's in good loving hands!

And then I had Baby who was 18 (Miligold.) She was very gentle and loving and would go to anyone including my granddaughter, till I had my back surgery. (I think the cervical collar had something to do with it.) Within a weeks time she did a total turn around and became very nasty. I tried for 4-5 months to get back where we were with no luck.

Aww heck. The woman from the rescue just called me. She went over to the people's house to pick up the B&G and the man's brother decided to take it to his friend's house out of the blue. Oh well. Here's wishing the best for it...

I don't have enough words to thank you Missi for opening your heart and home to those in need.
There's is no greater sadness than reaching the end of our ability to help, our homes are only so big...
My wife and I say "well we can move that cage here, and that one there, and maybe get rid of that, there...now we have more room".
Recently "Mac" entered our home, he is a 4-5 year old B&G Macaw, its like, we can use this cage for right now and place it here, and we don't have toys big enough, and I will have to get some different seed and pellets, and this and that, one would think we where preparing for our new child to come home from the hospital.
There's one thing different about this new kid, now the neighbors come over to see whats making all the noise...
Its crazy here Missi, when one looks out there front window to find a Police Officer standing there looking at your home, (thats crazy), so I walked out and asked him if I could help him with something, he says, "we got a call that there was a animal here being hurt", Soooooo I invite him in to meet the kids, (he stands in AWE), then looks at me like I am crazy....
Be prepared to buy a big bag of mixed nuts (in the shell) offer wood to chew up, many toys to take apart, offer alot of love...and PLUG YOUR EARS.....

LOL Arty! Thanks for your advice! Hopefully I will get to use it one day. However, for now the B&G has been placed with another person all of the sudden leaving the rescue coordinator and I in shock. I hope the bird was not just given to someone who will turn around and try to sell it....I can only hope good thoughts for the bird!

haha what you and you wife do, sounds like what I do!! However, it is my husband who just stands here looking at me like I am nuts. Okay, I am a little nuts...please tell me if there is someone who isn't a little nuts and is owned by parrots

I told the rescue coordinator to keep me in mind if any other parrots need, aside from Cockatoos and Greys (I'm allergic), fostering or rehoming. I have room for one more...techincally I have room for many more, but the hubby would never let that happen! haha Call me selfish, but I need a little bit of time for myself as well!
