Default pick a feather and put it back?

Afa has developed a new behavior. If she loses a feather while she preens, or breaks sheath from a pin, she picks it up and tries to put it back. She's mostly stashing them in her wing pit. But today I saw all kinds of stuff sticking out from under different feathers! It was random feathers, and loose down. She's not plucking, never has. She just kinda..replacing. Anyone else seen this?

That must look pretty funny. Once one of mine lose a feather they don't want anything to do with it.

I have never seen this, but the visual of what she's doing is pretty funny!

She gets really upset when it wont stay where she put it. she was just picking sheath again, stashing it away. It would fall back out and she would look it at it like "I cant believe this thing wont stay under my wing! I just cant believe it!" So she picks it up and tries again. I guess it could be worse if it was the other way around! AT least she wants to keep her feathers!

Now that is too cute. Wouldn't it be nice if they could put their feathers back in though!

Very very cute, some of the suns store other stuff in the feathers, but not lost feathers. Lost feathers seem to end up as nest material.

Maybe she has some Lovebird genes. They put stuff in their feathers to carry for nest building. She isn't hormonal is she?

The imagery is a killer - where are the photos?

I, too, have heard of certain species storing things in their wings but I can't remember which species. When I was in NY I was watching the swans and they would pick stuff out of the grasses and seaweed and tuck things in their wings.
