Smile Males & females - keeping them happy

I am so pleased to have a few members here who have flocks of Budgies. I think we have 4 members now.

Budgielover 2008 baby budgies - cute,
Catschair Moving day - the budgies,
2horse Baby budgie,
Superbudgie http://www.parrotchatter.com/newrepl...ote=1&p=111486

I hope I didn't leave anyone out! - if I did please step up & let us know.

I would like to continue the discussions of allowing or discouraging breeding. What do you people think is the best way to go about either?

I have 2 males so this isn't in my experience.

Well, since I don't want to let my budgies breed in order to be able to adopt some elderly budgies which need a new home, I'm trying to disencourage them to breed.
Normally that's fairly easy, they need a dark place to hide in to get into the breeding mood. So I don't provide any breeding box or alike.
But, I did have some females that wanted to lay eggs even without any dark place. This can happen because they are happy with their new flock here and because they get lot's of good and different food, so the breeding conditions would be quite good. Right now I have a female that layed some eggs and therefore I had to disencourage her in doing so.
So I turned off the full spectrum lamp and reduced the daylight in our living room. And also the food is a bit more boring now, not so much variety and fresh stuff. Especially they don't get any sprouts of bird food any more at the moment.
This has worked so far, she stopped laying eggs.
So now I will be able to improve the conditions again, but probably they will get the bird food sprouts only once a week I think.

My budgies are inside at the moment because of rats. I never have off season breeding when they outside. I don't allow ever more then 2 clutch in a year anyhow, simply removing the box stops this. Most often they only have one clutch. Food plays a big role, boring food stops the desire to breed. I allow quality breeding rather then quantity, they more pets than a breeding flock anyhow.

I have not given my budgies any breeding boxes this year. Mother Nature is controlling the lighting. People do keep giving me budgies, so I do increase the numbers often, but at least not the overall population <g> (though I do love baby budgies!!)
