My wife came home from work one day with a new little friend, Zazoo.
Seems one of her fellow workers was going through some hard times and was dealing with mental issues and she asked my wife to foster her bird for awhile.
Zazoo stayed with us for over a year, we found her to be charming, full of personality, she by all means became part of our family.
Oneday my wife had just finished clipping Zazoo's wings and both her and Zazoo were sitting out on the deck taking in some sunshine.
My wife came running into the house yelling my name, she said a gust of wind came up and Zazoo had taken flight, there's a childrens play park directly accross from our home, (fenced in) just beyond that is a marsh type area with waist high grass, well the wife said Zazoo flew up over the trees and then vanished out of site, both my wife and I climbed over the fence and began searching the field, for hours, we searched, we decided to rest and came home, 15 minutes later (this time I took 2 ladders along) we continued our search, all in all we spent 8 hrs on a Sunday walking a very large field with no luck, the grass was up to our waist, insects everywhere.
We came home and my wife began to cry, I knew this was coming...she cried and cried and cried, saying "how can I explain this to my friend, I am not a very good bird keeper", just beating herself up badly, she headed for her birds, she sat crying holding Joey our female tiel.
I sat down in my recliner, Being a roofer I turned on the TV to see what kind of weather was coming for Monday, heavy storms were forecasted, I thought to myself "oh great", "now our little orphan will be out there all alone and scared in a heavy storm", out the door I went again, I climbed the fence and walked to the center of the field and yelled, "Zazoo where are you?", then I heard her, it came from way over where my wife said she had vanished, I ran to that area, not for sure just where she was and knowing I had to be careful in the tall grass as not to step on her I called her name again, "Zazoo, where are you?", then I heard her again, I knew I was close, but the darn grass was so high, I walked to where her peep came from, again I called to her and out of the corner of my eye I saw a white flash as she tried to fly up and out of the grass, I snatched her up and put her down in my shirt and ran to our home, as i neared our aviary with tears in my eyes I called to my wife, I said, "guess who I have?", she looked at me with such question, and I pulled little zoo out from under my shirt, well my wifes world lit up.
The day came when my wifes friend asked for her bird back, away Zazoo went back to her owner, alittle over a year we cared for her.
1 month later my wife came home from work with disgust written in her eyes.
Zazoo had died, seems the little ball had stuck shut on her water bottle...
I still hurt badly for Zazoo....
Here's a photo of our little orphan ZAZOO.
