#1 | | | Cat attacked little one I just received an IM from 2horse.
Are there any wounds, The cat saliva is the main concern, hopefully the person has access to a pro biotic that can be syringed into the crop, 2 cc's for 7 Days.
The bird will need to be kept is a safe warm box, a heating pad set on low will work the best, please allow enough room in the box for the little one to get away from the heat if needed.
The bird will need a bath to remove the feline flora, luke warm water using dawn dish soap works well, any dish soap with a antibacterial agent, rinse well.
Do we know what kind of bird we are dealing with?
Offer water in a small bowl, at least an inch deep.
The best thing to do right away is to check the bird for wounds, neosporin applied to all punchers after washing the bird to rid the cat saliva.
All that is happening is traumatizing this little bird but must be done to save his/her life.
Placing the bird on a source of heat after tending to the wounds and cat saliva, a roomy box with a top, make sure there is enough air getting in, place the box in a safe Quiet place and look in on the little one now and then but for the most allow the bird to calm down.
I will need to know the species in order to say what to feed.
Please do no allow your pet cat to roam outside freely.
The feline is deadly to small wildlife, give wildlife a break, keep your cat inside safe and sound at all times.
I am heading for work, will check in as soon as I get home.

Keep in mind you are just another predator not much different from the cat, the bird wont understand you are helping it. Try not look in on the bird too much you will just scare it. You can put a little flat dish of water in the box but unlikely the bird will want to drink until he feels safe. No water is also ok for a few hours. After a few hours if you look in on the bird, do so in a darkish room, the bird will be less frightened that way.
Is there any wildlife rehabber in your area? I am going to send this message to Arty - Brokenwing, he may have a better idea than me. Also i am about to sleep so unavailable for a few hours. Hope the birdie is ok. Thanks for helping. Quote: |

Our 2 cats here are not allowed outside, maybe on a nice summers day, we allow them to come out onto the deck, they go off the deck and back in the house they go.
Most folks think I don't care for the cat, I have a serious issue with the stray cat and people that allow there cats to roam freely outside.
Its very hard to hold folks accountable for there pets actions while allowed to be at large, so here, I live trap the feline out for a stroll and call the authorities to come and get the animal.
What happens to that animal is of no concern of mine, it should be to the owner.....not me.
My concern is the wildlife that come here to eat and drink daily.
Its way past time for folks to begin standing up for wildlife.
I have trapped 3 so far this spring.
Sadly its the Cat the does the suffering...
Go figure!!!!!! | Hi its me with the injured bird. I have spoken to several vets none are interested in helping. It slept clinging to the bars of Billys small cage for 18 hours. It has now woken up and desperate to get out. We were advised to release it but we tried and it just fluttered to the floor so we picked it back up. We think it is a young starling, my mum has now taken it home to put in garage so it is safe to roam, it would have battered itself to death where it was. There are no obvious signs of injury except its legs are bald. It is holding its wings out all the time but moving them ok. My mum will be feeding it soaked meal worms as she feeds the wild birds but normally unsoaked along with other wild bird food. Our main concern is that we think its mum was still feeding it. if we can get it to eat and build its strength up for a few days we think it will be ok. It must be a tough little thing to have survived what it has over last 24 hours. I have some soluble probiotic if that is any good. Vets round here dont seem to care about wildlife, they just want to put them to sleep. He deserves a chance and we have actually had many an injured bird not expected to live over the years. more have survived than not. |

Well said Arty! I could not agree more. We don't keep cats ourselves, but I don't have anything against them. I am happy to say our town recently passed a by law to stop cats from roaming freely. They now have to be on a leash the same as a dog. We still have 2 or 3 strays that come around our place, and as soon as we can catch them they will be turned over to the city.
You do many wonderful deeds Arty! There are not enough in the world like yourself!
On Topic: Let's hope this little fellow pulls though!! Good on ya for taking the time to help him. Many would not have done the same. It's unfortunate that wildlife is not looked upon with the same value as household pets. We come into contact with lots of wildlife, as a very good friend of ours is a trapper by profession...many a time he has simply trapped the animal and brought it home...to nuture ...rather then just dispose of it.
Please keep us posted as to how this little one is doing...and listen closely to Arty...we could all certainly learn a lot from his wealth of experience and knowledge. |

(we have about 20 or so nests of various birds) Lately my cats have not been aloud out on the upstairs porch due to all the babies learning to fly. They typically land on the porch while flying. Cats are fine, and there is no reason to hate them, it's the irresponsible people that are the issue. | The little one has had an antibacterial bath as advised but my mum is concerned that it has traumatized him too much. Wish i had known about it last night, he was a breathing corpse last night, was totally out of it and wouldnt have known anything about it. He is now wrapped in a towel to keep warm. Thank you all for your advice, it is very much appreciated. We are far from out of the woods yet but he has come through so much in the last 24 hours, were all rooting for him to make it now. I honestly didnt expect him to survive the first half hour and to be honest i only put him in cage on a towel to die in peace. As for the cats there are hundreds round here, my next door neighbour just lets hers breed irresponsibly, i used to feed mine outside occasionally but within 10 seconds there would be 10 identical cats appear. Some days i would open my back door and it would be like hammer house of horror, there would be loads lining up on my doorstep 3 rows deep into my garden! PS how do we open a beak to feed the little one when it is about one eighth of an inch long and clamped shut? |
